What This Ceremony Cost Calculator Includes
This calculator separates three different money questions. First, the Home Office nationality application fee can include a ceremony element where the person must attend a ceremony. GOV.UK’s updated 8 April 2026 fee page lists AN naturalisation at £1,839 and says the ceremony fee is £130 where required. Second, a standard group ceremony with the local authority is normally covered by that application process. Third, a private ceremony is a local council service and may cost extra.
The calculator therefore shows the official ceremony fee count, the extra ceremony-day spend, and an optional first passport budget. It is most useful after approval, when the applicant has the Home Office invitation and needs to book with the council within the deadline. It is not an eligibility tool and does not assess whether a citizenship application should be made.
Cost Formula
The result distinguishes the application fee already paid from fresh cash needed around the ceremony.
Official ceremony fee count = adults requiring ceremony x £130, plus any child turning 18 fee
Extra ceremony-day cost = private ceremony fee + travel + photos + lost earnings or childcare
Total planning budget = extra ceremony-day cost + optional passport or document budget
If you have already paid the citizenship application fee, the £130 ceremony element is usually not a new payment on ceremony day. A private council ceremony may still be charged separately.
Group Ceremony Versus Private Ceremony
GOV.UK says you must book the ceremony with your council after receiving your invitation. A group ceremony is the usual route. It may have set dates, a limited number of guests and no extra fee beyond the application process. A private ceremony may offer a quicker or more personal appointment, but the fee is set by the council and can change by year, weekday, Saturday, resident status or room.
Private fees differ widely. Hackney’s 2026 information lists a private ceremony at £160 per adult citizen from 1 April 2026. Other councils publish different figures, and some quote per person while others quote family or room prices. Always enter the exact council quote rather than copying another borough’s fee.

| Adult standard online passport | GOV.UK passport fee page shows £102 from 8 April 2026. | Optional post-ceremony budget, not part of becoming British at the ceremony. |
Deadline Planning After The Invitation
GOV.UK says you must attend a citizenship ceremony within 3 months of receiving your Home Office invitation. The ceremony is not just a celebration; it is the final step where an adult normally takes the oath or affirmation and pledge and receives the certificate. If your council has limited group ceremony dates, book promptly rather than waiting for the end of the window.
If you applied for citizenship in the UK, GOV.UK says you cannot have the ceremony abroad. If you will travel, have work commitments, need accessibility adjustments or want family guests present, contact the council early. Private ceremonies can be useful where group dates do not fit, but the extra fee should be weighed against the risk of missing the deadline.
Worked Examples
The application fee has already included the ceremony element. Extra ceremony-day costs might be only travel, parking and photos, for example £35 travel plus £25 keepsakes.
Add the council’s private ceremony charge. If the quote is £160, travel is £25 and photos are £20, the fresh ceremony budget is £205 before any passport plan.
If two adults take a private ceremony and the council charges per adult, multiply the private fee. If the council charges a family appointment fee, enter that total as the private charge and set private people to one.
Costs People Often Forget
- Travel to the register office, train station parking, taxis or accessible transport.
- Lost earnings if the ceremony is during work time.
- Childcare for children who are not attending.
- Guest meal, flowers, photos, certificate folder or small celebration.
- First British passport fee, photo cost and document postage after the ceremony.
- Replacement certificate cost if a certificate is later lost or damaged.
Booking Checklist
Have the Home Office invitation, applicant name, reference number, local authority details and deadline date ready.
Check ID, invitation letter, guest limit, arrival time, accessibility needs, photo rules and whether guests need to be named in advance.
Store the naturalisation certificate safely, then apply for a British passport if needed for travel or proof of citizenship.

How much does a private citizenship ceremony cost?
It depends on the council. Some councils publish fees around £150 to £200, but you should use the quote from the council named in your invitation.
