What This Airport Parking Calculator Covers

This calculator helps plan the cost of getting a car to a UK airport terminal. It is useful for a quick goodbye at a drop-off forecourt, waiting for an arrival, a short-stay car park, long-stay parking, park and ride, meet and greet, hotel parking or a quote that has already been pre-booked. It keeps the tariff fields editable because airports change prices, payment deadlines, stay limits and concession rules.

The page does not treat airport parking as one single product. A five-minute drop-off, a 45-minute pick-up and a seven-night holiday parking stay all behave differently. A forecourt may be cheap for a very short stop but poor value if a delayed goodbye pushes the car beyond the included minutes. A long-stay car park may be cheaper but can add shuttle time. Meet and greet may cost more but reduce walking and luggage handling.

How The Calculator Chooses The Cost

The result first calculates a turn-up estimate from the selected visit type. For drop-off, it starts with the base charge and adds any extra-minute cost after the included minutes, capped if a cap is entered. For pick-up or short stay, it uses the first-period price and hourly add-ons, then compares the result with the daily cap. For long stay, meet and greet, or hotel parking, it multiplies the duration by the daily rate unless a pre-booked quote is entered.

If a pre-booked quote is entered, the result uses the lower of the turn-up estimate and the pre-booked quote, while still showing both. This is helpful when an official booking page gives a fixed price for exact dates. The free shuttle comparison is not always a money charge; it can be set as a personal time value so the result shows whether a free car park is worth the extra transfer time for your party.

Formula Used

drop-off estimate = base charge + extra minutes x extra-minute rate, capped where a cap is entered short-stay estimate = first-period charge + extra hours x hourly add-on, capped by daily rate where relevant long-stay estimate = parking days x day rate, unless a pre-booked quote is lower per-traveller cost = selected parking estimate / travellers

The overstay field adds time before the tariff is calculated. That helps with common airport problems such as late luggage, a delayed arrival, queues at the exit barrier, children needing more time, or a driver choosing to walk a passenger to check-in. It is not a penalty calculator and it does not estimate Parking Charge Notices.

Worked Example: Gatwick Drop-Off

Gatwick’s official drop-off page states a minimum charge for the designated terminal drop-off zones and gives a payment deadline of midnight the following day. In a simple example, a driver stops for 12 minutes with a tariff of GBP 10 for the first 10 minutes and GBP 1 per additional minute. The calculator estimates GBP 12. If two travellers are in the car, that is GBP 6 per traveller.

If the same driver wants time to unload bags, find a trolley and say goodbye properly, a short-stay car park might be more suitable even if it costs more. If the driver wants no parking fee and the passenger can use a bus transfer, the free long-stay or shuttle option may be better. The correct choice depends on luggage, mobility, time pressure, flight delay risk and payment rules.

Accessibility And Blue Badge Checks

Drop-Off Concessions

Some airports offer drop-off charge exemptions for Blue Badge holders, but the process often requires registration before or after the visit. A Blue Badge left in the car may not be enough if the airport uses ANPR billing. Check the exact airport process and deadline.

Assistance From Car Park To Terminal

GOV.UK says disabled passengers and passengers with reduced mobility have rights to free accessibility assistance at UK airports, including help from the car park or drop-off area to the terminal. Parking cost and assistance arrangements are separate, so plan both.

Payment Deadline Checklist

  • Check whether payment is made before entry, at exit, online after the visit, or by AutoPay.
  • For barrierless drop-off zones, note the airport’s payment deadline before leaving home.
  • Save the vehicle registration and payment receipt if someone else owns the car.
  • Do not use a drop-off zone for pick-up unless the airport says it is allowed.
  • Check whether late payment creates a Parking Charge Notice rather than a simple extra fee.

When A Free Shuttle May Be Better

A free shuttle can be the best option when the traveller has time, light luggage and no mobility barrier. It can be poor value when the party has children, large cases, sports gear, poor weather, a tight check-in time or an early-morning flight with low tolerance for delay. Use the time-value field honestly. If the extra shuttle effort is worth GBP 0 to you, set it to 0. If avoiding a stressful transfer is worth GBP 15, enter that value and compare it with terminal parking.

FAQ

Are airport drop-off charges the same across the UK?

No. Each airport sets its own forecourt, short-stay, long-stay and concession rules. Use the preset as a starting point and check the airport’s official page before travelling.

Does the calculator include Parking Charge Notices?

No. It estimates planned parking or drop-off cost. A PCN depends on the airport rules, payment deadline, vehicle record and any appeal evidence.

Should I use short stay for airport pick-up?

Often yes, especially if the flight is delayed or you want to meet the passenger inside. Some airports warn against using drop-off zones for pick-up.

Can Blue Badge holders avoid airport drop-off charges?

Sometimes, but the process is airport-specific and may require registration. Check the official airport page before relying on an exemption.

Is pre-booked parking always cheaper?

Not always, but it is often worth checking for longer stays. Compare the fixed quote with the turn-up estimate and cancellation terms.

What if my flight is delayed?

For pick-up, use the overstay field or wait away from the terminal until the passenger is ready. For long stays, check the airport’s overstay and amendment rules.
