Convert the standard A4 size of 210 x 297 mm into inches, compare it with US Letter, and check PDF or pixel export sizes.
A4 Setup
A4 is normally 210 x 297 mm. Change the values only if your document uses a custom trim size or a printer asks for bleed.

A4 Size In Inches
A4 paper is 210 x 297 mm. In inches, that is approximately 8.27 x 11.69 inches. Those numbers describe the trimmed sheet, not the printable area of a home or office printer. Many printers leave margins, and many PDF viewers offer scaling options that can shrink or enlarge the page. If the physical size matters, print at 100% or actual size and measure a test page before printing a full set of forms, certificates, planners, labels or handouts.
This converter is built for everyday A4 checks: office documents, PDF exports, stationery, binders, scanning, forms, classroom worksheets and files supplied to printers. It keeps millimetres as the master value, because A-series paper is defined in metric units, while also giving the inch result for software, US suppliers and international listings.
Calculation Method
The inch conversion is direct because one inch is exactly 25.4 mm.
inches = millimetres / 25.4
For A4, 210 / 25.4 = 8.2677 inches and 297 / 25.4 = 11.6929 inches. Rounded for normal use, A4 is 8.27 x 11.69 inches. If bleed is added, the calculator adds twice the bleed value to each side before converting, because bleed extends beyond all four edges.

A4 Versus US Letter
A4 and US Letter are close enough to cause mistakes, but they are not the same size. US Letter is 8.5 x 11 inches, while A4 is 8.27 x 11.69 inches. A4 is slightly narrower and noticeably taller. If a PDF made for Letter is printed on A4, it may scale down, clip, or leave unexpected margins depending on the print setting. If an A4 form is printed on Letter, the bottom content can be at risk unless the printer scales it. For official forms, certificates, labels and templates, use the paper size requested by the issuer rather than relying on a near match.
PDF And Printer Settings
If the file includes cut lines, labels, exam sheets or measured boxes, print at 100% or actual size. A “fit” setting can change the finished measurement.
Office documents usually need no bleed. Flyers, booklets and professional print files often need 3 mm bleed, but the printer’s artwork guide controls the final value.
For raster artwork, A4 at 300 DPI is about 2480 x 3508 pixels. Use a larger canvas if bleed is included.
Checking A4 In Office And Design Software
Most layout problems start with a hidden page-size choice. Word processors, PDF viewers, scanner apps and print drivers can all hold separate paper settings, so an A4 document can be opened with one size, previewed with another and printed with a third. Before sending a form or print file, check the document setup, the export setting and the printer dialog. If the document is A4, the trim size should remain 210 x 297 mm or 8.27 x 11.69 inches at every step.
For scans, confirm whether the scanner has captured the full sheet or only the used area. Cropping a white border can make the file look neater but can also break alignment for stamped forms, exam papers, music sheets and templates. For images, the inch size is only meaningful when paired with DPI or PPI. A 2480 x 3508 pixel file is A4 at roughly 300 DPI, while the same pixels printed at 150 DPI would cover a much larger physical area. If a supplier asks for A4 inches, bleed and 300 DPI, enter all three values in the converter rather than using the trim-size answer alone.
Frequent Errors
Do not enter centimetres into millimetre fields. Do not use 8.5 x 11 inches for A4. Do not assume the printable area is the same as the paper size. Do not add bleed to a file unless the printer asks for it. Do not use a pixel export for sharp print unless the image has enough resolution for the finished size. If a form, label sheet or certificate must align with a real object, print a one-page test and measure it.
FAQ
What is A4 size in inches?
A4 is 210 x 297 mm, which is approximately 8.27 x 11.69 inches. In wide format, the same sheet is 11.69 x 8.27 inches.
Is A4 the same as 8.5 x 11 inches?
No. 8.5 x 11 inches is US Letter. A4 is narrower and taller: about 8.27 x 11.69 inches.
What is A4 with 3 mm bleed in inches?
A4 with 3 mm bleed on every edge is 216 x 303 mm, which is about 8.50 x 11.93 inches.
What pixel size is A4 at 300 DPI?
A4 at trim size is about 2480 x 3508 pixels at 300 DPI. A bleed-size artwork file will need more pixels.
Why does my A4 PDF print smaller?
The print dialog may be set to fit, shrink oversized pages or use a different paper size. Choose actual size or 100% when measurements matter.
Should A4 artwork be made in millimetres or inches?
Use millimetres as the master unit for A4. Convert to inches only when software, a US supplier or a listing asks for inch dimensions.
