What A Chest Freezer Really Costs To Run
A chest freezer runs all year, so a small daily cost becomes a meaningful annual line on the electricity bill. The simplest estimate is the energy label kWh multiplied by your unit rate. That is a good start, but it can be too neat for real homes. A freezer in a hot garage, a utility room with poor airflow, or a unit with worn seals may use more electricity than its label value. A freezer that is kept full, defrosted and closed most of the time may stay closer to the label.
This calculator keeps those adjustments visible. You can enter the label kWh, your pence-per-kWh tariff, a room and use uplift, an age or seal penalty, and an optional standing-charge share. It also estimates rough CO2e and compares the current freezer with a newer model. The result is meant for household budgeting, replacement decisions and tenant or shared-house cost splitting, not for proving an exact appliance meter reading.
How To Find The Right kWh Figure
Look for the appliance energy label, instruction book, product page or rear rating plate. Modern product labels usually give annual kWh under test conditions. If you have a plug-in energy monitor, you can measure real use over a week and multiply it, but freezers cycle on and off, so a short test can be distorted by loading, defrosting, room temperature or a door left open. For an older freezer with no label, use a conservative preset and run a second case with a higher uplift.
Do not confuse watts with kWh. A compressor may draw hundreds of watts while running, but it does not run continuously. Annual kWh is the better input when available. If you only know a measured daily kWh, multiply by 365 and enter that as the annual kWh value.

Adjusted annual kWh = label kWh x (1 + room use uplift) x (1 + age or seal penalty)
Energy cost = adjusted annual kWh x electricity unit rate
Standing charge allocation = daily standing charge share x 365
CO2e = adjusted annual kWh x carbon factor
The calculator rounds costs to pennies and kWh to one decimal place. Standing charge is optional because the charge normally applies to the property whether or not the freezer is present. It can still be useful in a shared house, holiday let or small outbuilding where you want to allocate part of the total bill to a freezer. Carbon is only a rough factor; UK conversion factors change by year and reporting purpose.
Worked Examples
Medium freezer in a garage
A 220 kWh freezer at 24.5p/kWh has a base energy cost of about GBP 53.90 a year. Add a 12 percent room uplift and 8 percent age penalty, and the adjusted annual cost rises because the compressor is working harder than the label case.
Small efficient chest freezer
A newer 140 kWh model in a cool utility room may cost far less than an older large freezer. The saving is clearer when you compare the current kWh with a new model kWh, rather than comparing purchase prices alone.
Shared household split
If a freezer belongs to one housemate but the property has one electricity account, adding a small daily standing-charge share can give a practical cost split. Keep that line separate from the real energy cost.

Should You Replace An Old Chest Freezer?
Replacement is not only an energy question. Compare the annual saving with purchase price, delivery, disposal, repair risk, storage capacity and how much food you realistically keep. If the old freezer is rarely full, a smaller model or using the main freezer better may save more than buying a like-for-like replacement. If the freezer protects bulk cooking, garden produce or reduced-price food, the value of avoiding waste may be greater than the electricity cost.
When The Estimate Can Be Wrong
The estimate can miss short-term behaviour: a door left open, warm food placed inside, a power cut, a thermostat fault, or frequent loading after a supermarket shop. It can also miss tariff details such as time-of-use prices, solar self-consumption or an off-peak circuit. If the result will affect a landlord recharge, business account or dispute, use a plug-in energy monitor over a longer period and keep the readings.
