What This Dry Sand Converter Does

This converter estimates tonnes of dry sand from cubic metres. It is useful for paving bed estimates, mortar material checks, play sand orders, kiln-dried sand comparisons and storage or vehicle payload planning. The result includes base tonnes, adjusted tonnes, rounded bag count and a cost estimate.

Sand density depends on grading, grain shape, compaction and moisture. This page is specifically for dry sand. If the material is damp, use the moisture adjustment or a higher density. Wet sand can be much heavier and can also behave differently during screeding, mixing and spreading.

Formula Used

Base tonnes = cubic metres x dry bulk density. Adjusted tonnes = base tonnes x moisture adjustment. Order tonnes = adjusted tonnes x allowance. Bags = order tonnes divided by bag weight, rounded up.

Use the density that matches the supplier description. Kiln-dried sand, building sand and sharp sand do not always share the same bulk density, even when the volume is identical.

Worked Examples

One Cubic Metre

1 m3 of typical dry sand at 1.60 t/m3 weighs about 1.60 tonnes before allowance.

Paving Bed

0.75 m3 of dry sand at 1.60 t/m3 weighs 1.20 tonnes before allowance. With 8% extra, order about 1.30 tonnes.

Small Bags

If a small bag is 25 kg, change the bag field to 0.025 tonnes. The calculator then gives rounded small-bag count.

Measuring Sand Volume

For a rectangular area, multiply length by width by depth in metres. If a paving bed is 30 mm deep, use 0.03 m. For sand used in joints, kiln-dried topping or small repairs, the measured volume may be tiny, so bag rounding can dominate the purchase.

Stockpiles are harder. A loose pile is not a neat cube, and voids change as the pile settles. For valuable orders, supplier weighbridge data is more reliable than measuring a rough heap.

Dry Versus Damp Sand

Dry sand is the right assumption when the product has been stored under cover, kiln dried, or supplied specifically for dry use such as brushing into joints. Outdoor bulk sand is often not truly dry, even if it looks pale on the surface. Rain, ground moisture and storage conditions can add enough water to change the tonne figure for the same cubic metre volume. That is why the calculator includes a moisture adjustment instead of treating every sand pile as identical.

If you are collecting from a merchant, ask whether the quoted bag or loose load weight is nominal, weighed or based on a standard fill. A wet one-tonne bag can contain less dry sand by usable volume than expected, because part of the mass is water. For mixing work, moisture also affects the water you add later. The converter cannot set a mix design, but it helps keep the quantity check separate from the recipe.

Project Notes For Common Uses

For paving, the sand layer should be even and compatible with the paving system. A deep bed can move under load, while a shallow bed may not correct small base variations. For mortar, convert the sand quantity first, then use the specified mix ratio and allow for batching losses. For play areas, the material should be suitable for children and kept clean during delivery and storage.

Kiln-dried jointing sand is usually bought in small bags, so rounding matters. Enter 0.025 tonnes for a 25 kg bag and a shallow volume if topping up joints. For bulk building sand, use tonnes and lorry access to decide whether loose tipped delivery or bagged delivery is more practical.
