Solo walk
Best for dogs that need distance, training practice, slower pace, medical care or careful handling. It usually costs more because the walker cannot share time across several dogs.
Group walk
Best for social dogs who have been assessed and can travel, walk and recall safely in a managed group. Group size and transport time matter.
Visit
Best for puppies, senior dogs, post-vet care or toilet breaks. A visit may include feeding, water change, short play, cleaning and written updates.
How to Use the Calculator
Pick the service type and enter the provider’s price for one dog. Then choose the walk length. Some walkers charge by time out of the house, some by walking time after collection, and some by a fixed slot. Ask what is included before comparing a £14 group walk with a £22 solo walk, because the cheaper number may include travel in a van while the dog is waiting.
Enter the number of weekly walks. For a hybrid working pattern, use the average. A dog walked five days in office weeks but two days in home-working weeks might average three or four walks. Use the extra dog discount only when dogs are from the same home and can be handled together. Dogs needing separate walks should be costed separately.
Add weekend or bank holiday walks separately. A provider may charge more for Sunday, Christmas, New Year, bank holidays or last-minute bookings. Key holding, app updates, towel drying, feeding, parking and travel can also be charged separately. Those small costs can make a big annual difference.

The calculator uses an average month, not a four-week month, because most bills are spread across the year. If your walker invoices by exact calendar month, the bill will vary with the number of weekdays in that month.

Checks Before Hiring
- Insurance: Ask for public liability insurance and what it covers, including transport and key holding.
- Transport: Ask how dogs are secured in vehicles and how long they may be in transit.
- Group policy: Ask about group size, matching, off-lead permission, recall, muzzles and incident reports.
- Emergency plan: Give vet details, insurance details and consent limits for urgent care.
- Contracts: Read cancellation terms, weather policy, sickness cover, payment due dates and key procedures.
Worked Example
A solo walk costs £16, and the owner books five walks per week. The walker adds £2 travel per visit. Each standard visit is £18, so the weekly cost is £90. With a £5 monthly key-holding fee, the average monthly budget is about £395 and the annual cost is about £4,685.
If the owner changes to a group walk at £13 and no travel fee, the cost drops, but suitability must come first. A dog that is worried by groups may need the solo service even if it costs more.
FAQ
Is a 60-minute walk always better?
No. Puppies, senior dogs and some medical conditions may need shorter outings. Quality, pace and rest matter more than minutes alone.
Should my dog be off lead with a walker?
Only with written permission, suitable training, safe places and the walker’s policy. Some dogs should stay on lead or use a secure field.
Can I use this for cat visits?
The structure works for visit costs, but the care notes and welfare checks should be changed for cats.
Should travel time count as the walk?
Ask the provider. Some prices cover the whole service slot, while others count active walking time after collection.
Can two dogs share one booking?
Only if they can be handled safely together and the walker agrees. Dogs needing separate routes should be priced separately.
