Common Mistakes With Ferritin Units

The most common mistake is trying to multiply or divide ferritin by 1000 because micrograms and nanograms sound far apart. That would be wrong for this concentration because the litre-to-millilitre change cancels the mass-unit change. Another mistake is copying a reference interval from a different laboratory after converting the unit. Reference intervals can differ by assay method and population, so the local report remains the primary guide.

A second practical mistake is mixing ferritin with haemoglobin or serum iron.
