The result estimates the surface layer only. It does not design the base, membrane, drainage, edging, irrigation, levelling, maintenance plan or safe footing for a particular horse. Arena construction should be specified by a suitable contractor, especially on clay, sloping ground or wet sites.

What This Estimate Includes

The calculator covers the riding surface layer: sand, sand-and-fibre mix, rubber top-up or fibre additive. It takes the arena footprint, converts the chosen depth into cubic metres, applies settlement and waste allowances, then converts the volume to tonnes from the selected density. It is useful for early budgeting, supplier calls and checking whether a quote is in the right range. It does not cover excavation, stone base, drainage trenches, membranes, fencing, mirrors, lighting, levelling laser work, water systems, labour, plant hire or removal of old material.

Density is only an estimate because moisture, grading, fibre content and supplier stock affect weight. Sand is heavy, rubber is much lighter, and fibre additives are often ordered by bales or proprietary units rather than tonnes. If a supplier quotes by cubic metre, use the volume result. If a supplier quotes by tonne, use the tonne result and ask what density they assume. For a refurbishment, measure the depth of the existing usable surface before ordering a full new layer. Adding too much material can make the arena deep and tiring for horses.

Worked Arena Example

A 20 m by 40 m arena has an area of 800 m2. At 100 mm depth, the loose surface volume is 80 m3. If 8% is added for settlement and 5% for waste, the order volume becomes about 90.7 m3. With silica sand at an assumed 1.55 tonnes per m3, the result is about 141 tonnes. If bulk bags hold 0.85 tonnes, that would round to 166 bags, although a loose lorry load may be more realistic. The same volume in a rubber chip layer would weigh far less, which is why density must match the actual material.

Base, Drainage And Maintenance Checks

A good surface cannot rescue a poor base. Low spots, blocked drains, poor falls, unsuitable stone, weak edges and contaminated old material can all create puddles or unsafe going. Before ordering, inspect the base and drainage, particularly if the arena has become slippery, dusty, deep or uneven. Maintenance also matters. Harrowing, watering, levelling and removing droppings all affect how a surface rides. If horses are slipping, tripping or working unevenly, stop and seek qualified advice rather than simply adding more material.

Questions For A Supplier

Ask whether the quoted material is supplied by tonne, cubic metre, bag or bale. Ask for particle size, moisture condition, recommended depth, riding discipline, drainage requirements, maintenance method and whether the product is suitable for indoor or outdoor use. If the arena will be used for jumping, lunging, turnout, riding school work or competition, say so. Different uses create different wear patterns. Keep a sample and delivery ticket so future top-ups can match the existing surface more closely.

Also ask how deliveries are weighed, where the load can be tipped and whether the supplier can spread or mix the material. Access limits, wet ground and small gateways can change the labour cost even when the material quantity is correct.

FAQs

How deep should a horse arena surface be?

Depth depends on surface type, discipline, base and supplier specification. A common planning layer may be around 80 mm to 120 mm, but adding material blindly can make footing too deep.

Does this include the sub-base?

No. It estimates the riding surface layer only. Stone base, drainage, membrane, edging and levelling need separate design and pricing.

Why does density matter so much?

The same volume can weigh very differently. Sand is much heavier than rubber or fibre, so tonnes and delivery cost change with material choice.

Can I use bulk bags for a full arena?

For a full arena, loose loads may be more practical than many small bags. Bulk bags can suit repairs, top-ups or restricted access.

Should I add more surface if the arena rides deep?

Not without checking. A deep feel may come from too much loose material, poor moisture, bad grading, failed base or poor maintenance.

Is this suitable for competition surfaces?

It is a quantity estimate only. Competition use may need specific surface, drainage, maintenance and rule checks.
