The calculator also estimates a sub-base quantity because a decorative top layer alone is rarely enough for a stable driveway. A typical gravel top layer might be 40 mm to 60 mm deep, while a sub-base can be far deeper depending on ground and vehicle use.

Measurement And Ordering Checks
Measure the drive in sections if it is not a clean rectangle. Split an L-shaped drive into rectangles, add the areas and then enter the total as an equivalent length and width, or run the calculator for each section. For curves, measure generously and keep a sketch. Gravel is easier to order once than to match later, but too much loose gravel can cause spreading, rutting and difficult sweeping. The waste field should cover small losses, not replace careful measurement.
Sub-base and drainage are the areas where a cheap driveway can become expensive later. Soft ground, clay, tree roots, slopes, poor edging and standing water can all affect performance. If the drive will carry vans, caravans or frequent turning, take advice before relying on a shallow build-up. Planning rules can also apply to front gardens and surface water run-off. Driveway Build Checklist Before Ordering
Before paying for gravel, check whether the measured area is the finished surface or the excavation area. Edging, kerbs, drainage channels and gates can reduce or increase the usable area. Note any slopes, inspection covers, tree roots, soft patches or places where tyres turn sharply. A turning point needs more resistance to rutting than a straight parking strip. If the driveway meets a public footway or road, keep levels, loose stone movement and water run-off in mind before choosing the final surface.

Can I put gravel straight onto soil?

Many driveways use angular gravel around 10 mm to 20 mm. Very small gravel can move, while large stones may be hard to walk on.
Does this include labour?

Why round up bulk bags?
