Koi ponds usually need stronger circulation and filtration than simple ornamental ponds because fish size, feeding rate and waste load can be high. The target flow is not a water-quality guarantee. Filter maturity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature, shade, stocking level and maintenance all affect results.
Pump labels normally quote maximum flow at low or zero head. A pump installed below a filter, through long pipework, elbows, UV clarifier and a waterfall may deliver much less than the label. Use the manufacturer’s pump curve for the head height and pipe route you actually have.

Choosing A Pump Without Guesswork
Measure Real Pond Volume
For an existing pond, a water-meter fill or salt-dilution method can be more reliable than simple dimensions. Shelves, curves and raised edges make volume estimates optimistic.
Read The Pump Curve
A 12,000 L/h pump may not deliver 12,000 L/h after lift and pipe friction. Find the curve for the model and read the flow at your head height.
Separate Filter And Feature Flow
If a waterfall needs strong visual flow, a second pump can protect the biological filter from seasonal changes and feature adjustments.
Worked Examples
A 12,000 litre koi pond with a 1.5 hour turnover target needs 8,000 L/h delivered for filtration. If a waterfall needs 1,500 L/h, the pond target becomes 9,500 L/h. With 25% losses, the pump label needs to be about 12,667 L/h before rounding to a real model.
A 25,000 litre heavily stocked pond aiming for a one-hour turnover needs 25,000 L/h delivered before feature flow. At that size, pipe diameter, bottom drain capacity and filter design often matter more than buying one oversized pump. A low-wattage efficient pump may also save significant money because pond pumps often run all year.
Seasonal And Maintenance Checks
A pump that looks suitable on paper can underperform after a few weeks if the pre-filter, sieve, cage, impeller or pipework becomes clogged. Record the flow estimate when the system is clean, then watch for slower waterfall flow, reduced surface movement, warmer water, lower oxygen or rising waste readings. These signs can point to maintenance needs rather than a wrong pump size.
Summer feeding usually increases waste load, while warm water holds less oxygen. That can make circulation and aeration more important during hot spells. In winter, some keepers adjust flow or feature use to avoid chilling, but the biological filter still needs water movement if fish and filtration remain active. Any seasonal change should be made with water quality in mind, not only electricity cost.
Noise and reliability matter too. A pump working near its limit may be less efficient and may give little headroom as pipework ages. A slightly larger pump controlled by suitable valves or a variable controller can be useful, but only if the filter can handle the flow. Match the whole system rather than treating the pump as a standalone purchase.

Can a pump be too large?
Yes. Too much flow can overwhelm some filters, add noise, waste electricity or disturb fish. Match pump flow to filter rating and pipework.
Should waterfall flow count as filter flow?
Only if the water passes through the filter in the right way. A decorative bypass may not provide biological filtration.

Does this replace water testing?
