Floor Ratings

A floor rating may be for uniformly distributed load, concentrated load, line load or a combination. Converting the unit does not prove that a specific item can be placed there, because the footprint and support arrangement matter.

Equipment Footprints

For a tank, machine or rack, divide the total load by the true bearing area before comparing with an area load. Small feet or wheels can create high local pressure even if the average over the room looks modest.

Temporary Works

Scaffolds, propping, storage piles and site vehicles need site-specific checks. Soil, slab condition, edge distance and load duration can change the safe answer.

A note showing 2.5 kN/m2 converts to 52.21 psf. Over 20 m2, the total force is about 50 kN, or roughly 11,240 lb-force. That total does not mean every point on the floor is safe for a concentrated item; it only describes the equivalent uniformly distributed value over the chosen area.

Distributed Load Versus Point Load

The most common mistake is comparing a uniform area load with a concentrated load. A floor note in kN/m2 or psf usually describes load spread across a square metre or square foot. A machine foot, rack upright, safe wheel or temporary prop may deliver force through a much smaller contact patch. The average pressure over the whole room can look acceptable while the local bearing pressure is too high at one foot.

When you are checking a product sheet, identify the contact area first. A 1,000 kg item on four small feet is not the same as 1,000 kg spread over a pallet-sized base. If the product gives total mass only, you may need foot size, baseplate size or wheel load before a pressure comparison is meaningful. The converter can help once you have the correct pressure, but it cannot create missing load information.

Also keep permanent, imposed, wind, snow, storage and construction loads separate. Engineering documents often combine loads using rules from a standard or project specification. A converted value should therefore be copied with its label, such as “service imposed load” or “allowable bearing pressure”, not as an isolated number.

For temporary storage, think about time as well as weight. A short delivery placed on a slab for minutes may not be treated the same as long-term pallet storage, water tanks or archived material. If the surface is cracked, damp, suspended, timber-framed or near an edge, a simple area conversion is only the first question.

For product comparisons, check whether the source uses allowable, ultimate, characteristic or service load wording. Those terms are not interchangeable. Copy the wording with the converted psf value so the safety basis is not lost. Note the support spacing as well.
