What The Patio Estimate Includes
This calculator gives a practical first pass for a rectangular patio. It estimates paving area, slab count, waste allowance, packs to buy, sub-base volume, bedding volume, perimeter edging and broad material cost. It is not a structural design, drainage design or quote from a contractor. Ground conditions, load, falls, access, drainage, existing slabs and local rules can all change the job.
The slab count is based on a simple grid with the joint allowance added to each slab size. That works well for uniform rectangular slabs laid in straight courses. It is less suitable for random mixed-size project packs, circles, curves, herringbone, diagonal layouts and patios with many cuts around drains or steps. For mixed packs, use the supplier’s coverage per pack and then treat the calculator’s pack count as a budget cross-check.
The result deliberately separates theoretical quantity from order quantity. Theoretical area answers the geometry question. Waste and pack rounding answer the buying question. A patio can need 31.4 slabs by area but still require two packs because suppliers sell whole packs and breakage happens.

Loose aggregates settle, deliveries are rounded to bag or bulk-bag sizes, and small errors in depth can be expensive across a large area. The calculator gives volume so you can compare bulk bags, tonne bags and loose loads from suppliers.
Worked Patio Examples
Small Seating Area
A 3 m by 3 m patio is 9 m2. With 600 mm slabs and a 10% waste allowance, the estimate usually falls near one modest pallet or a set of individual slabs. The sub-base volume is still important because small patios often fail at the edges if the foundation is weak.
Family Dining Patio
A 4.8 m by 3.6 m patio is 17.28 m2. The calculator shows both slab count and packs, then adds a perimeter length for edging. This is useful when the furniture plan needs a clear rectangular zone plus a stable border.
Porcelain Paving
Porcelain slabs often need careful cutting, suitable adhesive or bedding method, and accurate jointing. A higher waste allowance may be sensible if the layout has steps, drains, diagonal cuts or visible feature lines.

Measuring And Drainage Checks
Mark the patio on the ground before ordering. Measure the longest and widest points, then check diagonals if a square or rectangular layout is important. If the house wall, fence or garden boundary is not square, the visible cuts may be different from the neat drawing. Add more waste for diagonal patterns, curves, drains, inspection covers, steps and borders.
Plan falls before excavation. Water should move away from buildings and should not create a new problem for a neighbour. For front gardens and driveways, rules around permeable surfacing and drainage can apply. The material estimate cannot decide planning permission or drainage compliance.
Slabs are heavy. Check pack weights, delivery access, lifting route and safe handling before the pallet arrives. A cheap pallet can become expensive if it is dropped kerbside far from the garden and has to be moved by hand through a narrow house. Order with access confirmed.
FAQs
How much waste should I add for patio slabs?
For a simple rectangular patio, 10% is a common planning allowance. Use more for diagonal layouts, curves, mixed-size patterns, porcelain cuts, visible borders or difficult access.
Does the calculator handle mixed-size project packs?
It gives a useful area and budget check, but mixed packs should be ordered from the supplier coverage table. Project packs depend on the laying pattern and the exact mix of slab sizes.
Should joints be included in the slab count?
Yes for a simple grid estimate. The calculator adds the joint allowance to the slab dimensions to avoid over-ordering where joints make the laid area slightly larger.
How deep should the sub-base be?
Depth depends on ground conditions, load and build-up. The default is a planning value, not a design instruction. Patios for light foot traffic differ from driveways and heavy-use areas.
Can I use this for a driveway?
No. Driveways can need different foundations, drainage, load design and planning checks. Use a driveway-specific method rather than a patio slab estimate.
Why are packs rounded up?
Suppliers sell whole packs and spare slabs are useful for cuts, breakage and future repairs. Theoretical area alone does not match how paving is bought.
