What The Pet Sitting Estimate Covers
This estimator is for owners comparing care while they are at work, away overnight or on holiday. It adds the sitter’s base rate, extra-pet charges, travel, medication tasks, peak surcharges, one-off key collection and platform fees. The result is not a quote from a sitter and it does not decide whether a service is safe for a particular animal.
Pet sitting prices vary because duties vary. A ten-minute cat feed is not the same as two dog walks, overnight house care, puppy visits, senior-pet toilet breaks or caring for animals that need injections. The calculator therefore asks for service units per day and extra care costs rather than assuming every pet needs the same visit.
Use the result to make the conversation clearer. A sitter can confirm what is included, whether travel is charged once or each visit, how keys are handled, what happens if a pet becomes ill, and whether they carry suitable insurance. For home boarding, ask about licensing where required, household pets, sleeping arrangements and supervision.
Care Cost Method
Chargeable service units:
service units = days away x visits or units per dayService cost before surcharge:
service cost = service units x (base rate + extra pet fee x extra pets + travel fee)Special care cost:
special care = days away x medication or special care fee per dayPeak surcharge:
peak surcharge = (service cost + special care) x peak percentage / 100Total booking estimate:
total = service cost + special care + peak surcharge + meet-and-greet + cancellation buffer + platform feeThe platform fee is applied after the booking subtotal, because many online services charge a percentage on the whole booking. If your sitter charges a fixed app fee instead, add it to the cancellation buffer or meet-and-greet field. If the sitter charges travel once per day rather than once per visit, reduce the travel fee or the units accordingly.
Worked Care Examples
Two Cats, Twice-Daily Visits
A seven-day booking with two drop-ins per day, a GBP 18 base rate and GBP 4 extra pet fee creates 14 chargeable visits. With travel and a peak surcharge, the total is much higher than a single advertised visit price. This is a common holiday-planning gap.
Dog Walks During Office Days
Five weekday dog walks at GBP 16 each may look simple, but parking, extra dog fees and app charges can change the weekly cost. If the sitter walks several dogs together, ask about group size, route, lead rules and recall policy.
Overnight House Sitting
Overnight care often includes evening, sleepover and morning duties. Some sitters also charge for midday walks, houseplant care or long travel. Enter one unit per day for the overnight base, then add special tasks separately.
Care Checklist Before Booking
| Check | Why It Matters | What To Agree |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency plan | The sitter may need to contact a vet while you are away. | Vet practice, out-of-hours clinic, spending limit and contact order. |
| Keys and access | Lost keys or failed access can leave pets without care. | Collection date, spare key, alarm code and neighbour backup. |
| Medication | Routine medicine may need exact timing or handling. | Written instructions, storage and what to do if a dose is missed. |
| Insurance | Accidents, lost keys and public liability need clear cover. | Sitter insurance, platform cover or written terms. |
| Pet behaviour | Reactivity, anxiety, escape risk and feeding quirks affect care. | Walk routes, safe rooms, muzzle or harness instructions and warning signs. |
| Updates | Owners often want reassurance without interrupting care. | Photo frequency, message channel and urgent-call rules. |
When A Cheap Quote May Not Be Best
A low advertised visit price can be good value for a calm pet with simple needs. It can be poor value if the visit is too short, travel is unclear, medication is rushed, insurance is missing, or the sitter has no plan for emergencies. Compare what is included rather than only the headline price.
For dogs, ask how long the walk lasts, whether travel time is included, whether dogs are transported in a vehicle, how many dogs are walked together and whether the sitter uses your equipment. For cats, ask whether litter trays, food bowls, water fountains and medication are included. For rabbits, birds, reptiles and small pets, ask whether the sitter has species experience.
If a pet has medical needs, separation anxiety, aggression history or escape risk, a professional sitter, vet nurse visit or boarding setup may be safer than the cheapest local option. The cost estimate should support a care decision, not replace animal welfare judgement.
FAQs
How much should I budget for pet sitting?
Start with the sitter’s own rate, then add visit count, travel, extra pet fees, peak surcharges and any app charge. The total can be very different from one advertised visit price.
Does the calculator cover home boarding?
Yes for cost planning. Choose home boarding and enter the daily rate. Check licensing, household pets, supervision and insurance separately because those rules are not priced by the calculator.
Should medication cost extra?
Some sitters include simple tablet administration; others charge more for time-sensitive or complex care. The special care field lets you add an agreed daily amount without turning the page into treatment advice.
How do I price two pets?
Enter the total number of pets and the extra-pet fee. The base rate covers the first pet, then the calculator adds the extra-pet fee for each additional pet per service unit.
What if my sitter charges per day, not per visit?
Set units per day to one and enter the daily rate. For overnight or live-in care, this usually gives a clearer result than trying to split every task into visits.
Does this page check sitter insurance?
No. It only estimates cost. Ask the sitter or platform for insurance details, cancellation terms, key handling and emergency procedures before booking.
