Manual Calculation
What is BPM?
BPM stands for “Beats Per Minute” and measures the tempo or speed of music. It indicates how many beats occur in one minute of music. For example:
- 60 BPM = One beat per second
- 120 BPM = Two beats per second
- 180 BPM = Three beats per second
BPM is essential for musicians, DJs, producers, and dancers to match tempos, create smooth transitions, and maintain consistent timing.
How to Use This Calculator
Tap Method: Simply tap the large blue button in rhythm with your music. The calculator will automatically determine the BPM after several taps. More taps provide greater accuracy.
Manual Method: Count a specific number of beats whilst timing with a stopwatch, then enter the values to calculate precise BPM.
Use the ×2 and ÷2 buttons if you were tapping in eighth notes instead of quarter notes, or to adjust for half-time rhythms.
Common BPM Ranges by Genre
| Genre | BPM Range |
|---|---|
| Ballad | 60-80 BPM |
| Hip Hop | 70-100 BPM |
| Pop/Rock | 100-130 BPM |
| House | 120-130 BPM |
| Techno | 120-140 BPM |
| Drum & Bass | 160-180 BPM |
Classical Tempo Terms
Traditional classical music uses Italian terms to indicate tempo:
Very slow and broad
Slow with expression
Walking pace
Moderate speed
Fast and lively
Very fast
BPM Conversion Guide
Convert BPM to other musical measurements:
- Beat Duration: 60 ÷ BPM = seconds per beat
- Milliseconds per beat: 60,000 ÷ BPM = ms per beat
- Bars per minute: BPM ÷ beats per bar
Example: At 120 BPM, each beat lasts 0.5 seconds or 500 milliseconds. In 4/4 time, there are 30 bars per minute.
Professional Applications
Music Production: Set project tempo, sync loops, program drum machines, and align multiple tracks.
DJing: Match beats between songs for seamless transitions and create smooth mix sets.
Live Performance: Coordinate with backing tracks, maintain ensemble timing, and prepare setlists.
Dance & Fitness: Match music tempo to choreography or workout intensity.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the tap method?
The tap method becomes increasingly accurate with more taps. Tap for at least 10-15 beats to achieve reliable results. Consistent tapping rhythm is more important than perfect timing on individual taps.
What if my song has tempo changes?
For songs with tempo changes (rubato), measure BPM during stable sections. Some pieces may require multiple measurements at different sections to capture the full tempo variation.
Should I tap on beats or subdivisions?
Tap on the main beat (usually quarter notes in 4/4 time). If you tap faster subdivisions like eighth notes, use the ÷2 button to get the correct BPM.
Can I use this for heart rate measurement?
Yes, this calculator works for measuring pulse or heart rate. Simply tap along with your heartbeat instead of music beats.
What’s the difference between BPM and time signature?
BPM measures tempo (how fast), whilst time signature defines the rhythmic structure (how beats are grouped). A song can be 120 BPM in either 4/4 or 3/4 time signature.
