Common Charge Presets
Estimated Charge
This estimate does not check your number plate, exemption, grace period or local enforcement rule. Use the official checker before travel.
What The Estimate Is For
Clean Air Zone and ULEZ costs depend on the place, vehicle type, emissions standard, exemption status and the day of entry. A car may be charged in one city and not in another. Some zones charge private cars, while others focus on taxis, vans, buses, coaches or HGVs. This estimator is a planning aid for trips, work routes, deliveries and short fleet checks.
The preset buttons are starting examples, not a replacement for the official number-plate checker. Use them to fill the charge field quickly, then edit the amount to match the city page or checker result. If your vehicle is compliant or exempt, set charged days to zero or place the days in the exempt field so the estimate records why no charge is expected.
Charge Method
The normal trip cost is calculated as charge per day multiplied by vehicles and by charged days after exempt or avoided days have been removed. A separate penalty line is optional because a missed-payment notice is not a planned travel cost. The result shows both the planned charge and the total including the contingency line if you choose to enter one.
Most zones use a daily charge, so entering the zone twice on the same charging day for the same vehicle may still be one daily charge. Local payment windows, midnight cut-offs, grace periods, resident rules and fleet accounts differ. Always check the local payment page before assuming a multi-stop route is covered by a single payment.
Example Charge Reference
| Place or vehicle group | Example daily charge | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| London ULEZ car, van or motorcycle | GBP 12.50 | Use TfL’s vehicle checker and payment page. |
| Birmingham non-compliant car, taxi or LGV | GBP 8 | Check Birmingham City Council and GOV.UK checker. |
| Birmingham bus, coach or HGV | GBP 50 | Vehicle category matters. |
| Bristol non-compliant car, taxi or LGV | GBP 9 | Check Bristol’s boundary and payment page. |
| Bath non-compliant taxi, van or minibus | GBP 9 | Private cars and motorcycles are not charged in Bath CAZ. |
| Bath bus, coach or HGV | GBP 100 | Large vehicle rate can differ sharply from vans. |
| Sheffield non-compliant taxi or van | GBP 10 | Private cars and motorcycles are not charged in Sheffield CAZ. |
| Bradford non-compliant van or minibus | GBP 9 | Class and exemption rules should be checked locally. |
Trip Planning Examples
Weekly van route
A non-compliant van entering a GBP 9 zone for four charged days costs GBP 36 for the week. If the route is repeated for 46 working weeks, the annual budget line becomes GBP 1,656 before any vehicle replacement decision.
Family car visit
A car visiting a GBP 12.50 zone for two separate days costs GBP 25 if the vehicle is chargeable. If the official checker says the car is compliant, the charge is zero and only parking or tolls need separate planning.
Fleet delivery
Three vans entering a GBP 8 zone over five charged days cost GBP 120. The estimator is useful here because vehicle count and day count can make a small daily charge become a material monthly cost.
Checks Before You Travel
- Use the official number-plate checker, not just the make, model or age of the vehicle.
- Check the boundary map. A hotel, depot or car park may sit just inside a zone.
- Confirm whether the charge applies to cars, vans, taxis, HGVs, buses or only some groups.
- Check payment windows, because late payment can create a penalty charge notice.
- For work vehicles, record who is responsible for payment and evidence of compliance.
When A Different Cost May Matter More
For occasional trips, the daily charge may be cheaper than changing vehicle, using rail freight, hiring a compliant van or rerouting. For daily routes, the annual charge can become large enough to compare with vehicle replacement, consolidated deliveries or a depot change. This estimator gives the charge side only. It does not value time, fuel, parking, insurance, leasing, employee travel, customer service impact or vehicle resale value.
FAQs
Does this check if my vehicle is compliant?
No. It estimates cost from the charge you enter. Use the GOV.UK or local vehicle checker with the registration number before relying on a zero or charged result.
Is ULEZ the same as a Clean Air Zone?
No. London ULEZ is run by Transport for London. Clean Air Zones in other cities are run through local and national arrangements. The charging idea is similar, but rules and boundaries differ.
Do I pay once per day or every time I enter?
Most charging schemes are daily, but check the local page for the charging day, payment deadline and vehicle-specific rule.
Why can I enter a penalty charge?
The penalty field is only a contingency line. It helps businesses model missed-payment risk, but it should not be treated as part of normal travel cost.
Are private cars charged in every CAZ?
No. Some Clean Air Zones do not charge private cars. Vehicle type and local class are essential checks.
Can I use this for fleet budgeting?
Yes, enter the vehicle count and charged days. For a large fleet, export the result to your own sheet and check each vehicle registration officially.
