For bark mulch, cubic metres are usually the primary buying unit. Tonnes mainly help with delivery access, payload and manual handling.

What This Bark Mulch Converter Does

This converter changes bark mulch volume into tonnes and also helps you calculate mulch volume from bed area and finished depth. It is aimed at planted borders, shrub beds, tree circles and soil-covering jobs where bark mulch is used to reduce bare soil, moderate moisture loss and give a tidy finish.

Bark mulch should not be treated like gravel. A cubic metre of bark mulch may weigh only a few hundred kilograms, while a cubic metre of stone can weigh more than 1.5 tonnes. Moisture, particle size, age and composted content all affect the weight. The calculator keeps both volume and tonnes visible so you can order by the right measure and still check handling weight.

Calculation Method

Volume from bed = area x depth in metres. Base tonnes = volume x bark mulch density. Order tonnes = base tonnes x top-up allowance. Bulk bags = order tonnes divided by bag weight, rounded up. Volume cost = order volume x price per m3.

The allowance is not only waste. Bark mulch settles, works into surface hollows and may need a light top-up after rain. A new bed usually needs more allowance than a quick refresh over an existing layer.

Worked Examples

New Shrub Bed

25 m2 at 60 mm is 1.5 m3. At 0.30 t/m3, that is 0.45 tonnes before allowance. With 15% extra, the order weight is about 0.52 tonnes.

Annual Top-Up

25 m2 at 30 mm is 0.75 m3. The weight is modest, but the volume may still be several large bags.

Wet Delivery

1.5 m3 at 0.38 t/m3 gives 0.57 tonnes before allowance. This can matter if the load is being moved through a house or down steps.

Using Mulch Around Plants

Mulch works best when the soil is weeded, watered if dry, and levelled before spreading. Do not pile bark against stems, trunks, air bricks or timber cladding. A thick ring of damp mulch against a stem can trap moisture where it is not wanted. Around trees, leave the root flare visible and spread mulch outwards rather than building a mound.

If the bed contains many established plants, the real cover area may be smaller than the measured bed outline. For a dense planted border, subtract obvious plant footprints only if they take up a lot of space. Otherwise, a small allowance is easier than trying to draw every plant.

Check whether the product is ornamental bark, play bark, composted bark or coarse mulch.
Volume can settle in bags during transport.
Fine mulch may form a denser layer than coarse nuggets.
Wet bark is heavier and can stain surfaces while being moved.

Mulch And Soil Health Notes

Bark mulch is usually placed on top of soil, not dug through it as a main soil improver. Over time it can break down and become part of the surface organic layer, but the first purpose is cover. If the soil is very poor, add compost or soil improver separately before mulching, then use bark to protect the surface.

Avoid making the mulch layer too deep around small perennials. Deep bark can hide crowns, make replanting harder and slow soil warming in spring. The calculator helps plan volume, but plant needs still set the final depth. Recheck depth after raking, not while the mulch is still piled.
