Formula Used

Volume from area = area x depth in metres. Base tonnes = volume x bulk density. Order tonnes = base tonnes x allowance. Bulk bags = order tonnes divided by bag weight, rounded up. Cost = order volume x price per cubic metre.

Density depends strongly on moisture and particle size. A damp, fine composted bark can weigh much more than a dry coarse load even when both are described as one cubic metre.

One Cubic Metre

1 m3 of typical composted bark at 0.45 t/m3 weighs about 0.45 tonnes before allowance.

Bed Coverage

18 m2 at 50 mm is 0.90 m3. At 0.45 t/m3, the base weight is 0.41 tonnes before top-up allowance.

Damp Product

Using 0.55 t/m3 for damp composted bark raises a 1 m3 load to 0.55 tonnes before allowance.

Using Composted Bark Well

For a mulch layer, spread composted bark over weeded and watered soil, then rake it level. Leave space around crowns, stems, trunks and air bricks. If it is used as a soil improver, follow product guidance and avoid burying woody material too deeply where nitrogen balance or drainage is a concern.

Composted bark can vary from fine, dark material to coarser pieces. Fine material may knit together and hold more water; coarse material can leave more air gaps and weigh less. The calculator gives a practical estimate, but the actual product description should guide use.

Coverage Planning By Bed Type

For planted borders, the depth you enter should be the finished depth after raking, not the height of a loose pile just after tipping. A 50 mm layer is often enough to reduce exposed soil while still allowing water to reach the root zone. Around young plants, keep the layer shallower close to the stem so crowns are not buried. Around established shrubs, a slightly deeper layer can be useful where soil is bare, but avoid building a raised collar against woody stems.

For tree circles, measure the ring as an area rather than guessing from the diameter alone. If there is an existing mulch layer, decide whether you are topping up or replacing it. A 25 mm top-up over a large bed can require far less material than a full 50 mm fresh layer. Storage And Handling Notes

Composted bark is commonly delivered damp, and a tipped load can be heavier than expected after rain. If the delivery is left on a drive or paved area, protect surfaces where staining would matter. Keep the pile away from drains, door thresholds and shared access routes. If the product is in bulk bags, check that lifting equipment or pallet delivery is suitable for the drop point.

When moving bark by barrow, plan shorter runs and avoid filling each barrow to the top. Volume makes the load bulky, while moisture adds weight. If the material will be stored for more than a few days, cover it loosely so rain does not add unnecessary mass, but leave enough air movement to avoid sour odours. Recheck the moisture setting if conditions change between ordering and use.
