Border Dressing

Slate Chippings
0.80 m3 of slate at 1.25 t/m3 is about 1.00 tonne before allowance, lighter than many dense stones.
Dense Chips
0.80 m3 of dense stone at 1.65 t/m3 is 1.32 tonnes before allowance. That difference can change the bag count.
Measuring And Laying Notes
Measure the actual area to be covered. For curves, divide the shape into simpler parts and add them. Use internal dimensions inside edging, not the outside of the timber or metal edge. If the stone sits over a membrane, make sure the membrane overlaps and is pinned before the stone arrives.
A neat decorative finish often needs enough depth to hide membrane and soil, but too much loose stone can be hard to walk on. The right depth depends on stone size and use. Small gravel can sit thinner than large cobbles, while driveways need a firm base under the decorative layer.
Choosing Stone Size And Density
The density field should match the product rather than the colour name. Two pale stones may have different bulk weights if one is rounded gravel and the other is angular limestone. Slate often has a flatter shape and can cover a surface with less weight per cubic metre. Granite, basalt and dense limestone can sit at the heavier end of the planning range. Stone size changes both appearance and practicality. Very small gravel can migrate onto paving and into lawns, while large cobbles need more depth before the surface looks even. For wheelchair, pushchair or frequent foot traffic, a thinner loose layer over a firm base can be easier than a deep, shifting layer. For decorative borders, depth is mainly about hiding soil or membrane and leaving a consistent finish across the area.
Aftercare And Top-Up Planning
Decorative stone rarely stays perfectly level after the first rain, foot traffic or leaf clearing. Keep a small reserve from the same batch for thin patches, edges and later repairs. This is especially useful with coloured stone because later batches can vary slightly. Rake lightly rather than dragging soil up through the surface.
If the area sits below trees, choose a stone size that can be cleared without removing large amounts of aggregate with the leaves. If weeds appear, remove them before roots lock into the membrane or base. The calculator can be reused for top-ups by entering only the patch area and a shallow depth, such as 10 or 15 mm.
