Frequently Asked Questions
How much extra fabric should I buy?
Always purchase an additional 10-20cm beyond the calculated amount. This accounts for cutting errors, pattern matching adjustments, and potential future alterations. If your fabric has a large pattern repeat, consider buying an extra pattern repeat length.
What if my fabric width is different from the options?
The calculator uses standard UK fabric widths. If your fabric is narrower, you may need additional widths. If it’s wider (like 280cm), you might need less. Contact your fabric supplier to confirm the exact width available.
Can I use this calculator for bay windows?
For bay windows, measure each section separately and calculate fabric for each. The total will be the sum of all sections. Consider how the curtains will hang – whether on a curved track or individual poles for each section.
How do I calculate for patterned fabrics?
Enter the pattern repeat distance in centimetres. The calculator will automatically adjust the fabric length to ensure patterns align across all curtain widths. Larger patterns require more fabric due to matching requirements.
What about lining fabric?
Lining fabric typically requires the same amount as your main fabric, minus pattern repeat allowances. Standard lining is usually 137cm wide. Cotton sateen or blackout lining are popular choices in the UK.
Should curtains touch the floor?
This depends on your preference and room style. Curtains can finish at the sill, just below the sill, or floor length. Floor-length curtains should either just touch the floor or have a slight break. Avoid curtains that hover above the floor.
