What the Result Is For

This calculator is for commuters deciding whether a bike, e-bike or a few cycling days each week would make a real difference to their money. It does not assume every commute can be cycled every day. Rain, childcare, shift times, heavy bags, hills, security and winter light all matter. That is why the tool asks for cycle days per week and working weeks per year instead of multiplying a perfect week by 52.

The result is strongest when you enter the cost you would otherwise pay on those exact days. If you drive, include fuel and daily parking. If you use public transport, enter the daily cost of the ticket you would not buy. If you already pay for a monthly or annual season ticket and cycling would not reduce that ticket, enter only the extra cost that changes. Savings come from avoided costs, not from costs that stay the same.

Four Costs to Check Before You Decide

Daily travel

Fuel, rail fare, bus fare, parking, tolls and local road charges are the headline costs. These often decide whether part-week cycling pays back quickly.

Bike upkeep

Tyres, brake pads, chains, cassettes, lights, mudguards and servicing are real costs. A cheap result that ignores them is less useful.

One-off kit

A lock, helmet, lights, rainwear, pannier and workplace clothing can matter more than the bike price for short commutes.

Time and reliability

Cycling can be faster or slower depending on traffic, parking, shower access and routes. Add time value separately if it is a deciding factor.

Formula and Method

The carbon estimate uses a simple petrol or diesel car replacement assumption of 0.289 kg CO2 per mile. Use it as a planning signal only, because real emissions depend on vehicle, traffic, passengers and driving style. E-bike charging is usually small compared with car fuel, but you can add it to the bike running cost if you want a stricter result.

How to Enter a Part-Week Commute

Many people get the best result from two or three cycling days rather than full-time cycling. Enter the number of days you can keep doing through most of the year. If you work from home on Fridays, do not count Friday. If school holidays reduce your cycling months, reduce the working weeks. If you only cycle in spring and summer, enter a smaller annual pattern rather than a hopeful weekly number.

For shift workers, enter the average across a rota. A nurse who cycles six return trips in one fortnight would use three days per week. A site worker whose location changes should treat each common site as a separate estimate. For hybrid workers, count office days only. Clear inputs will give a cleaner budget than a single optimistic monthly guess.

Costs People Often Miss

Locks and security can be the largest early cost if you park in a public place. Good lights, reflective items, puncture tools and a pump are small purchases individually but add up. Tyres and brake pads wear faster in wet weather. Chains and cassettes last longer if cleaned and lubricated, so a small maintenance budget can prevent a large repair. If you ride an e-bike, add insurance, battery care and servicing from a shop that works on your motor system.

Clothing can be modest or expensive. Some commuters ride in ordinary clothes; others need waterproof trousers, overshoes, gloves and a change of shirt. If you need secure storage at home, add a ground anchor or shed lock. If you need to join a gym near work for showers, count that only if you would not buy the membership anyway.

When the Saving May Be Smaller

The calculator can show a high saving, but it should be read with care when your usual cost does not change. A season ticket paid in advance might not become cheaper if you cycle occasionally. A company car may still have fixed tax, insurance or lease costs. A free workplace car park means fuel may be the only direct saving. On the other hand, a paid city car park, congestion charge, low emission charge or station car park can make even one cycling day per week worthwhile.

There are also non-financial reasons to choose or avoid a cycle commute. Fitness, stress, parking, childcare and carrying equipment all count. The calculator gives the money side so you can compare it with the practical side.

FAQ

Can I use the HMRC 20p bicycle rate for normal commuting?

Ordinary commuting is usually not the same as business travel. The 20p per mile bicycle rate is relevant where an employer can pay approved mileage for eligible business miles. Use the allowance field only when it applies to your situation.

Should I include the cost of buying the bike?

Yes, if you want a payback estimate. Leave setup cost at zero if you already own the bike and only want the yearly saving from using it.

How should I value my time?

The calculator does not price your time because commute speed varies widely. If time is central to the decision, compare door-to-door minutes for each mode and add your own time value beside the money result.
