How to Use the Calculator
Select the size band that best reflects handling and drying time. For example, a compact but dense-coated dog may need a higher cost than its weight suggests. Then choose coat type. A short smooth coat may need bath, dry and nail care; a curly coat often needs brushing, clipping, shaping and careful checking for matting close to the skin.
Choose the service level. Bath and brush is not the same as a full groom. A puppy session may be shorter and designed to build confidence. A style cut or breed trim may include extra scissor work. Add coat condition honestly. If the coat has mats, pelted areas, burrs or faeces stuck in hair, the groom can take longer and may need a different plan. Severe matting can be a welfare issue and may need vet input if skin is sore, infected or injured.
Use the weeks-between-grooms field for annual planning. A dog costing £70 every eight weeks costs less per year than a dog costing £55 every four weeks. Frequency, coat maintenance at home and the chosen style are all part of the true cost.

The calculator uses multipliers because grooming is driven by time and coat work, not by one flat price. It is still an estimate. A groomer may change the quote after seeing the dog, coat condition, temperament and any health issues.

Health and Safety Notes
- Skin problems: Redness, sores, smell, parasites or pain should be checked by a vet. A groomer cannot diagnose skin disease.
- Senior dogs: Older dogs may need shorter sessions, rest breaks, non-slip surfaces and a practical trim.
- Puppies: Early gentle visits can help, but the groom should be short, positive and suited to vaccination timing.
- Aggression or panic: Tell the groomer in advance. A muzzle, vet plan, behaviour referral or different service may be needed.
- Home brushing: The cheapest groom is often the one where the coat is maintained between visits.
Worked Example
A medium curly-coated dog needs a full groom every eight weeks. The size price is £50, the curly coat multiplier is 1.55 and the full groom multiplier is 1. The adjusted base is £77.50. Add £12 for paw balm and teeth cleaning and £8 travel, giving about £98 for the appointment. Across a year, that is around six and a half appointments, so the annual budget is about £637.
If the owner switches to a shorter practical trim and brushes regularly, the coat condition fee may stay at zero. If appointments stretch to twelve weeks and matting appears, the price can rise even though visits are less frequent. Frequency and coat condition work together.
FAQ
Why does matting cost extra?
Matting slows the groom, can be painful and may require a welfare-led clip. It also increases blade wear and handling risk.
Should I bathe my dog before grooming?
Ask the groomer. Bathing a tangled coat can tighten knots. Brushing and keeping the dog dry may be more useful before a professional appointment.
Can this calculator price show grooms?
Only as a rough start. Show preparation, hand stripping, coat conditioning and ring trims need a direct quote from a specialist groomer.
How often should I budget for grooming?
Use the groomer’s advice for the coat and style. Curly and long coats often need a shorter interval than smooth coats.
Can a groomer refuse a coat condition?
Yes. If the coat, skin, behaviour or health issue makes grooming unsafe, the groomer may stop and suggest vet care or a different plan.
