DPI and DPCM in Plain Terms

DPI

DPI means dots per inch. It is widely used in print settings, scanner software, PDF export panels and image metadata.

DPCM

DPCM means dots per centimetre. It is the metric version of the same density, useful when print sizes are specified in centimetres.

Pixels

Pixels are the image sample count. DPI or DPCM only gains print meaning when paired with a physical size.

How to Use the Converter

Use DPI to DPCM mode when a print brief gives a resolution in dots per inch but the production sheet asks for dots per centimetre. Use DPCM to DPI mode for the reverse. The arithmetic is exact because it depends on the inch-to-centimetre definition: one inch is 2.54 cm.

Use pixel mode when you know the image width in pixels and the intended print width. For example, a 3600 pixel wide file printed at 12 inches is 300 dpi. The same density is 118.11 dpcm. If the print width is given in centimetres, use the target centimetre field to see how many pixels are needed at the selected density.

This converter does not improve an image. Changing metadata from 72 dpi to 300 dpi without adding pixels only changes the suggested print size. The actual detail comes from pixel count, capture quality, sharpening, compression, paper, ink, printer, viewing distance and the production method.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing pixels with DPI: A file can be 300 dpi in metadata and still have too few pixels for a large print.
  • Changing metadata only: Resaving a file at a higher dpi setting does not add real detail unless resampling is used, and resampling cannot recreate missing detail perfectly.
  • Ignoring viewing distance: A wall poster can need fewer dots per centimetre than a close-viewed photo book.
  • Mixing PPI and DPI: Pixels per inch and dots per inch are often used loosely. For this page, the same numeric density conversion is used.

Another common mistake is treating every print product as if it needs the same density. A small product label, a magazine image, a gallery print and an exhibition banner are viewed at different distances and may be printed by different processes. Ask the printer for the requested file size, colour mode, bleed, safe area and resolution at final size. Then use this converter to translate their inch-based or centimetre-based resolution into the unit your layout file uses.

Worked Example

A printer asks for artwork at 300 dpi, while the production checklist uses centimetres. Divide 300 by 2.54. The result is 118.11 dpcm. If the print is 20 cm wide, multiply 20 by 118.11, giving about 2,362 pixels across. A file that is 1,800 pixels wide would print at only 90 dpcm at that width, or about 229 dpi.

If a scanner is set to 600 dpi, the metric density is 236.22 dpcm. That can be useful for line art or archiving, but for ordinary photos it may create larger files without visible benefit if the original lacks detail.

For a metric example, suppose a brochure image must print 12 cm wide at 118 dpcm. Multiply 12 by 118 to get 1,416 pixels. If your file is 2,400 pixels wide, it has enough samples for that width. If the same file is stretched to 30 cm, the density falls to 80 dpcm, or about 203 dpi. The file has not changed, but the physical print size has changed the density.

FAQ

Is DPCM just DPI in metric units?

Yes. DPCM is dots per centimetre, and the conversion uses the exact 2.54 cm per inch relationship.

Does 300 dpi always mean high quality?

No. It is a density value. Pixel count, source sharpness, compression, paper and print method still matter.

Can I use this for PPI?

For unit conversion, yes. PPI and DPI are different concepts, but the inch-to-centimetre arithmetic is the same.

Why does my layout app show a different number?

Some apps round display values, use a placed-image scale percentage, or report effective resolution after resizing. Check final physical size, not just the file metadata value.

Can changing DPI metadata fix a small file?

No. Metadata can change the suggested print size, but it does not add real pixel detail to the image.
