Quick Answer

For 2026/27, NHSBSA material uses GP pensionable pay and annualised pensionable income to select the member contribution tier. GP providers and salaried GPs include the surgery income in Column A plus eligible solo or other GP income in Column B. Non-GP providers can only pension income from one nominated surgery or contract, so the calculator ignores Column B when that role is selected. The result is an estimate to help check monthly deductions, annual certificates and practice records. It is not a substitute for the official NHS Pension Scheme forms, PCSE or LHB instructions, accountant review or NHSBSA guidance.

Formula And Estimate Method

GP pensionable pay = Column A + Column B - excluded income Non-GP provider pensionable pay = Column A - excluded income Annualised pay for tier = pensionable pay / active days x 365 Member contribution = pensionable pay x contribution tier percentage Balance = member contribution - contributions already deducted

The tier is selected from annualised pay, while the contribution amount is calculated on actual pensionable pay for the period entered. This matters for part-year joiners. A GP expected to earn GBP 85,000 over part of a year can have a higher annualised tier than the raw pay might suggest. The calculator follows that principle, but it cannot judge whether income is eligible, whether forms A and B are complete, or whether a particular payment belongs in officer membership instead.

Column A, Column B And Exclusions

InputTypical MeaningCommon MistakeCheck
Column AEstimated NHS pensionable income for the surgery named on the form.Using gross receipts before correct profit allocation.Check practice accounts and NHSBSA form wording.
Column BEligible solo GP income such as OOHs, ICB or appraisals where relevant.Adding officer PAYE hospital work that belongs elsewhere.Keep employment income separate.
Non-GP providerIncome from one nominated contract only.Adding external income that cannot be pensioned.Use the selected contract only.
Excluded incomeIncome not pensionable under the relevant rules.Leaving non-pensionable private income in the estimate.Ask accountant or pensions administrator.
Active daysDays in membership during the scheme year.Ignoring annualisation for a joiner or leaver.Use the date record for the practice.

Worked 2026/27 Examples

A GP provider with GBP 85,000 in Column A and GBP 12,000 in eligible Column B has estimated pensionable pay of GBP 97,000. If active for the full year, the annualised pay is also GBP 97,000, so the 12.5% member rate is applied to actual pensionable pay. If the member has already had monthly deductions, enter those to see the planning balance.

A non-GP provider with GBP 70,000 in Column A and GBP 8,000 external income should not add the external income in the calculator. Non-GP providers can only pension income from one nominated contract. The result therefore uses Column A only, less any excluded amount. If the practice record and the individual’s expectations differ, the official form and administrator should be checked before deductions are changed.

Important Limits

This calculator does not decide NHS Pension Scheme membership, officer versus practitioner status, GP locum treatment, limited company income, basis period reform, Type 2 self-assessment, annual certificate values, arrears recovery or refund handling. It also does not store personal details and should not be used to collect real names or membership numbers. Use it as a working note beside official documents, then keep the final figure from PCSE, the LHB, the practice accountant or NHSBSA records.

For monthly checking, compare the estimated annual contribution with deductions already made. A large balance may signal that the estimate, active days, Column B income or tier selection needs review. Do not change payroll deductions from this page alone; reconcile against the official practice record first.

FAQs

Which year does this GP pensionable pay estimate use?

It uses the 2026/27 contribution tiers from NHSBSA material published for the 2026/27 estimate of GP and non-GP provider NHS pensionable profits/pay.

Why is annualised pay different from actual pay?

Annualised pay scales a part-year amount to a full-year equivalent for tier selection. Contributions are then calculated on actual pensionable pay for the period.

Can a non-GP provider include external income?

The NHSBSA 2026/27 form states that non-GP providers can only pension income from one surgery or contract and cannot pension external income such as OOHs.

Does this replace the annual certificate?

No. It is a planning calculator only. Practices and members still need the official annual certificate, Type 2 self-assessment or other required forms where relevant.

What if the estimate changes during the year?

The practice may need to update estimates and deductions. Check PCSE, LHB, NHSBSA or accountant instructions before changing records.

Does this include employer contributions?

The main result focuses on member contributions. Employer contribution handling depends on current scheme funding rules and practice payment arrangements.
