Field And Plot Cautions

Small plots make errors easy. A handful of material spread across 1 m2 becomes a very large kg/ha figure after conversion. Measure plot area carefully, keep paths out of the treated area unless they are meant to be treated, and record whether the weight was product weight or active ingredient weight. For fertiliser, product kg/ha and nutrient kg/ha are not the same unless the product is 100% nutrient, which is rarely true. A 20% nitrogen fertiliser applied at 100 kg/ha supplies 20 kg nitrogen per hectare.

For sports turf or lawns, overlap can produce stripes or scorch. For seed, over-application can increase competition between plants. For soil amendments, water content and bulk density can change spread behaviour. The converter helps the arithmetic, but calibration, weather, label restrictions and local advice still matter.

Small Plot Calibration Notes

Small plot work needs extra care because the hectare figure magnifies every weighing and area error. If a trial plot is 2 m by 5 m, the treated area is 10 m2. Applying 250 g across that plot equals 25 g/m2, or 250 kg/ha. If the plot width is wrong by only 10 cm, the hectare rate changes. Mark the treated area before weighing material, keep paths separate, and record whether headlands or border strips were included. For hand spreading, divide the material into several passes so one heavy throw does not distort the whole plot.

Calibration is different from purchase planning. A waste allowance may help you buy enough product, but the application rate should be checked against the target rate, product label and any adviser note. If the product contains nutrients or active ingredients, keep a second calculation line for that percentage. This avoids mixing product weight, nutrient weight and active ingredient weight in the same figure.

When comparing trial records, also record the spreader setting, walking speed, bout width and weather conditions. A correct unit conversion cannot repair a poor calibration run.
