Measuring The Gutter Run
Measure each straight roof edge that needs guttering. For a simple house, this may be the front and rear eaves. A garage, bay, porch or extension can add short runs. Do not measure the sloping roof face; measure the horizontal edge where the gutter sits. If an old gutter is still in place, measure the visible run and note every outlet, corner, stop end and union. If the fascia is being replaced, wait until the final line is known before ordering cut-to-fit parts. A small sketch with labelled runs will prevent most ordering mistakes.

It counts one outlet per downpipe and estimates joints from the number of stock gutter lengths. Corners, running outlets, adaptors, fascia brackets, rise-and-fall brackets, shoe bends, hoppers, offset bends, clips and sealants vary by system, so add them from the manufacturer list. If the run has several corners, count them separately. If you are matching an existing system, check profile, width, colour and brand, because half-round, square and deep-flow parts do not always mix cleanly.

Worked Example
A semi-detached house has 8 m front eaves and 8 m rear eaves, plus a 2 m porch run. The measured gutter run is 18 m. With 8% waste, the order length is 19.44 m. If gutter is sold in 4 m lengths, the order rounds up to 5 lengths. With brackets every 0.8 m, the estimate is 23 brackets before adding extra near outlets and corners. Two 5 m downpipes require 10 m of pipe, which rounds up to 3 stock lengths if pipe is also sold in 4 m lengths. The list is a starting order, not a substitute for checking each fitting on site.
Capacity, Fall And Drainage Notes
Gutter length is only one part of a roof drainage choice. A long roof slope, steep pitch, valley, blocked leaf area or high rainfall exposure may need a larger profile or extra outlets. The gutter must also have a suitable fall toward the outlet, and the downpipe must discharge into a proper drain or soakaway arrangement. Where work changes surface water drainage, check Building Regulations guidance and local rules. If water already overflows during heavy rain, replacing the same length with the same profile may not solve the cause. Clean the gutter, inspect fall and check downpipe blockage before blaming size alone.
Ordering And Fitting Checks
Check fascia boards before ordering. Rotten or uneven fascia can make a neat gutter run impossible without repair. Measure access height and decide whether scaffold, a tower or professional fitting is needed. Plastic gutter can expand and contract, so follow the manufacturer’s marks for joint insertion. Do not glue parts that are designed to move in a seal. If you are connecting to cast iron, aluminium or a neighbour’s existing system, plan adaptors before buying. Keep spare seals and stop ends for future maintenance because older colours and profiles can become hard to match.

How do I measure gutter length?
Measure the horizontal eaves edge where the gutter will sit. Add each straight run separately, then add a waste allowance for cuts, overlaps and small measuring errors.
How many brackets do I need?
Divide the measured gutter run by the chosen bracket spacing and round up. Add extra support near outlets, corners, stop ends and joints if the system instructions call for it.
Does this calculate gutter capacity?
No. It estimates length and common parts. Capacity depends on roof area, rainfall, gutter profile, outlet size and fall.
Should I include the downpipe height?
Yes. Enter the vertical height from outlet to discharge point for each downpipe. Add bends, shoes and clips from the supplier system.
Can I use this for a garage?
Yes. Enter the garage eaves run and downpipe height. For a single straight garage run, side length can be left at zero.
Why add waste?
Waste covers cuts, damaged pieces, awkward corners and small measuring errors. It is usually cheaper than stopping work for one short length.
