How To Measure For A Rug
Most UK rug sizes are given in feet and inches, such as 5’9″, 6’0″ or 6’3″. A common measuring method is from the centre of the chest, along the side of the horse, to the point of the buttock. Keep the tape level and close to the body without pulling it tight. If you measure from withers to tail, the number is not the same as a rug size, so the calculator adds an allowance. If possible, measure with the horse standing square on level ground and ask another person to hold the tape.

Fitting Checks Before Use
Fasten the chest straps and cross surcingles according to the rug instructions, then check the shoulder, wither, chest and quarters. The rug should cover the body without restricting movement. It should not press hard on the withers, pull tight across the chest or slide back when the horse walks. Leg straps and tail cords should be adjusted safely, with no dangling loops. After the first short wear, check for rub marks, heat, sweat patches, slipping and pressure points. A rug that looks fine standing still may move badly once the horse rolls, grazes or walks.
Weather, Weight And Welfare Notes
Rug size is separate from rug weight. Fill weight, turnout fabric, breathability, clipping, age, shelter, coat type, body condition and weather decide whether a rug is suitable. Over-rugging can cause sweating and discomfort, while under-rugging can be a concern for clipped, thin, old or unwell horses. Check the horse, not only the forecast. Feel under the rug at the shoulder and behind the elbow, check skin and coat condition, and adjust as the weather changes. If a horse loses weight, gains weight or changes shape, recheck the fit rather than reordering the old size automatically.
Keep a short note of the brand, size and fit comments for each rug. That record is useful when buying a spare, replacing a damaged turnout or comparing stable rugs with outdoor rugs.
Worked Rug Size Example
A horse measures 190 cm from the centre of the chest to the point of the buttock. Dividing by 2.54 gives about 74.8 inches. UK rugs are usually sold in 3-inch steps, so the nearest size is 75 inches, written as 6’3″. If the horse is broad or the brand tends to run small, the calculator may suggest checking 6’6″ as well. If the horse is narrow or the rug brand is generous, 6’0″ may be worth trying. The correct result is the one that sits safely on the horse, not the one printed by the tape alone.
