The conversion changes both the mass unit and the area unit. It is not enough to convert kilograms to pounds, because the rate is spread over a different land area. Use the converted rate only as a unit change. It does not say whether the rate is right for a crop, soil test, pesticide approval, grazing plan or nutrient limit. For fertiliser, active ingredient and product weight may be different. For sprays, water volume, nozzle choice and crop stage can matter as much as the headline rate.

Field And Product Checks
Seed And Fertiliser Bags
Convert the rate first, then calculate total product. If the bag label gives nutrient content, do not treat nutrient kilograms as product kilograms. A 20% nitrogen product needs more product than the pure nitrogen rate.
Spray And Active Ingredient Labels
For plant protection products, the approved label controls use. This converter cannot check maximum dose, crop approval, water volume, buffer zones, operator protection or local restrictions.
Trial Plots And Small Areas
For very small plots, weigh product carefully and use the area entered in the same measurement basis as the plot plan. A few square metres can create large percentage errors when scaled to hectares or acres.
Worked Examples
A seed recommendation of 180 kg/ha converts to 160.59 lb/acre. On a 10 hectare block, the base total is 1,800 kg before calibration loss. With a 3% allowance, the purchase or loading quantity becomes 1,854 kg. For a lime rate of 2,500 kg/ha, the rate is 2,230.45 lb/acre, which may be clearer as about 1.12 short tons per acre if using US material notes. For a fertiliser plan, keep nutrient analysis beside the converted product rate so the agronomic meaning is not lost.
Record Keeping For Mixed Unit Plans
Mixed unit plans are common when a farm, estate, grounds team or trial site receives advice from different sources. Keep the original kg/ha value, the converted lb/acre value, the field area, the product name and the calculation date in the same record. That makes it much easier to explain why a spreader, drill or sprayer was set to a particular value later in the season.
For nutrients, write the analysis beside the rate. A product may be labelled by total product weight while the recommendation is written as nitrogen, phosphate, potash, lime neutralising value or active ingredient. Converting kg/ha to lb/acre does not convert those chemical meanings. If a recommendation says 60 kg/ha of nitrogen and the product is 30% nitrogen, the product rate is not 60 kg/ha. The unit conversion should come after the product-rate calculation, not before it.
For contractors, send both units only if the operator needs them. Too many numbers on a work order can cause the wrong column to be used. Put the chosen operating unit in bold on the sheet, keep the converted value as a check, and confirm whether the field area was measured in hectares, acres, square metres or mapped acres.
