A line pair contains two lines: one dark and one light. To sample that pattern at the theoretical minimum, you need two samples per line pair. Since there are 25.4 millimetres in an inch, the Nyquist-style conversion is lp/mm multiplied by 2 and then by 25.4. That is why 50 lp/mm becomes 2,540 dpi.

The formula is useful, but it is not a promise that a scanner or camera will capture that much real detail. Optical quality, focus, film flatness, grain, sensor sampling, sharpening and contrast all matter. Some scanners advertise high dpi values that exceed their optical resolving power. Film Frames

For a 36 mm x 24 mm frame, 50 lp/mm at the Nyquist minimum gives roughly 3,600 x 2,400 pixels. If you scan at a higher margin, the file will be larger, but real detail may not increase if the film and lens do not support it.

Lens Tests

Line-pair charts measure contrast at fine spacing. A lens may resolve a pattern weakly at one contrast level and strongly at another. Converting to dpi does not capture the contrast part of the test.

Printer DPI

Printer dots are not the same as image pixels. Inkjet and laser printers use screening, droplets or toner patterns. A printer’s dpi rating should not be treated as the same thing as optical lp/mm.

A microscope chart result of 100 lp/mm converts to 5,080 dpi at the two-sample minimum. That number helps compare sampling, but microscope work also depends on numerical aperture, illumination, cover glass, focus and camera coupling. Keep the optical test conditions with the converted value.

A print discussion may say that a source contains 20 lp/mm. The equivalent minimum sampling is 1,016 dpi. That does not mean a home printer must be set to 1,016 dpi. Printing uses halftone or screening methods, and viewing distance changes what is visible. The converter is best for optical sampling, not print marketing claims.

How To Use The Number Sensibly

Use the converted dpi to choose a scan setting that does not throw away detail. If the original is valuable, scan a small test area at two or three settings and compare real detail at 100% view. Look for sharper edges, not only larger files. If a higher scan setting increases file size but not real line separation, the lower setting may be enough.

Do not compare line pairs and dots without saying which sampling rule you used. “80 lp/mm equals 4,064 dpi at two samples per line pair” is a clear statement. “80 lp/mm equals 4,000 dpi” is usable shorthand, but it hides the assumption. If you use a 2.5x or 3x margin, label that margin clearly.

Reading Test Charts And File Sizes

Line-pair results are often read from a resolution chart where fine bars merge together. The last visible pattern is not always the last useful pattern. One person may count a low-contrast pair as resolved, while another may require a cleaner separation. Keep the chart type, contrast, lighting and viewing method with the converted dpi value, especially when comparing lenses, scanners or microscope adapters.

File size rises quickly as dpi rises. A 35 mm frame scanned at about 2,500 dpi is far smaller than the same frame scanned at 6,000 dpi. If the extra pixels only show grain, dust or sharpening halos, the larger file may slow editing without improving the final print. For archiving, many users keep one high-quality master scan and then make smaller working copies for web, email or proof prints. The converter helps choose the master sampling target; it does not choose compression, colour depth or restoration settings.
