The estimate compares redelivery with collection and safe-place alternatives.
Always follow the carrier card or tracking page. This page prices practical options; it does not change delivery rules.
What The Parcel Cost Result Shows
The calculator compares three common choices after a missed parcel: book redelivery, collect from a depot or pickup point, or use a safe-place, neighbour or locker option. The cheapest line includes direct fees plus optional time value, travel cost and delay risk. A redelivery may be free but still inconvenient if there is a good chance of missing it again. A depot collection may have no carrier fee but can cost fuel, parking and time.
The tool is deliberately practical rather than carrier-specific. Royal Mail, Parcelforce, Evri, DPD, Yodel, Amazon Logistics and marketplace sellers use different rules, tracking pages, ID checks, depot opening times and collection windows. Always use the carrier’s card, email or tracking page as the instruction source. The calculator helps you decide which available option is worth choosing.
For expensive, urgent or signed-for items, the lowest money cost may not be the best option. A small collection cost can be worthwhile if the item is time-sensitive, fragile, a gift, a work item or likely to be returned to sender if delayed. Use the delay value and return-to-sender risk to make that trade-off visible.
Cost Formula
Redelivery expected cost:
redelivery cost = fee x parcels + failed redelivery risk x collection cost
Collection travel cost:
collection cost = return miles x pence per mile / 100 + fare or parking + time hours x time value
Safe-place option:
safe-place cost = safe-place cost + return-to-sender risk x delay value
Time cost:
time cost = minutes / 60 x hourly time value
Best option:
best option = lowest estimated cost among available options
Risk costs are only planning values. They do not represent compensation, carrier liability or legal entitlement. They simply let you put a rough pound value on inconvenience.
Worked Missed-Parcel Examples
Free Redelivery, Flexible Day
If redelivery is free and somebody can be home, the redelivery cost may be close to zero. The failed-redelivery risk should be low if the recipient can choose a suitable date.
Depot Collection By Car
A 6 mile return drive at 45p per mile costs GBP 2.70 before parking and time. If the collection takes 35 minutes and time is valued at GBP 10 per hour, the practical collection cost becomes about GBP 8.53.
Urgent Work Item
For an urgent item, collection can be cheaper than waiting even if the redelivery is free. Enter a higher delay value to reflect missed work, replacement purchase or a deadline.
Carrier Option Checklist
| Option | What To Check | Cost To Enter | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home redelivery | Available dates, signature, safe-place rules. | Redelivery fee and failed-redelivery risk. | Missed again or returned after attempts. |
| Depot collection | Opening hours, ID, parcel hold period. | Mileage, parking, fare and time. | Long queue or item not yet ready. |
| Locker or pickup shop | Transfer time, opening hours, code expiry. | Safe-place or locker cost if any. | Limited storage window. |
| Neighbour | Permission, building access and trust. | Usually zero, unless you add a courtesy cost. | Availability or miscommunication. |
| Seller replacement | Seller policy and return-to-sender timing. | Delay value if the parcel is sent back. | Refund delay or item no longer in stock. |
Practical Collection Notes
Check the parcel hold period before delaying collection. Some items are held only for a set number of calendar days. Bank holidays, local depot closures and failed ID checks can reduce the practical time available. If the parcel needs proof of address or photo ID, take the exact documents requested on the card or tracking page.
For work addresses, flats and shared buildings, a safe-place option may be less safe than it sounds. A lobby, bin store or communal hallway can create loss or dispute. If the item is valuable, signed-for or age-restricted, redelivery or collection may be safer even if it costs more.
For multiple parcels, collection can become more attractive because one trip collects several items. Enter the parcel count and one collection trip, but check whether all parcels are at the same site and ready at the same time.
When Redelivery Beats Collection
Redelivery can be the better option even when collection looks cheaper. If the depot trip means taking time off work, paying for parking, arranging childcare or carrying a heavy item home, the real cost can exceed the fee shown on the carrier page. Enter a time value that reflects the disruption, not only fuel.
Collection can still win when several parcels are waiting, the depot is near an existing errand, or the item is urgent and redelivery dates are poor. For high-value goods, check whether the carrier will hand the item to a neighbour, leave it at a pickup point or require the named recipient. The result should lead to a practical choice: fastest, cheapest or lowest risk.
FAQs
Is Royal Mail redelivery free?
Royal Mail commonly offers redelivery options without a basic fee, but always check the current card or tracking page for the specific item.
Why price my time?
Collection can look free until travel and queue time are counted. Set time value to zero if you do not want to price it.
Can I use this for any courier?
Yes for cost comparison, but the available options, fees and hold periods come from the carrier’s own tracking page.
What if the parcel is urgent?
Increase the delay value or use the urgent preset. The cheapest direct fee may not be best for time-sensitive items.
Does this calculate compensation if a parcel is lost?
No. It estimates personal cost and inconvenience. Carrier compensation depends on service terms and evidence.
Should I choose safe place for valuable items?
Only if the carrier allows it and the location is genuinely safe. For high-value or signed-for items, collection may be safer.
