What The Family Total Covers

This calculator is designed for households renewing more than one UK passport in the same planning window. It adds the official application fees published by GOV.UK, then layers in the costs that family budgets often miss: photos, secure return of supporting documents, paper-form help, postage, travel to a branch and urgent appointment extras. The result is not a passport application and it does not check entitlement to a British passport.

The fee table used here follows GOV.UK passport fees in force from 8 April 2026: adult standard 34-page passport, adult 54-page frequent traveller passport, child standard 34-page passport and child 54-page frequent traveller passport. Online and paper prices are separate because paper applications cost more. People born on or before 2 September 1929 can get or renew a standard British passport for free, but urgent services and frequent traveller upgrades can still cost more.

The result is most useful before school holidays, group travel, a wedding abroad or a family move. Renewing several passports together can create a sharp one-month cost even when every individual fee is expected. The budget cushion is included because one rejected photo or one missing certificate can make a neat estimate too low.

Family Cost Method

Official passport fee total:

passport total = adult standard fees + adult frequent traveller fees + child standard fees + child frequent traveller fees

Extra cost total:

extras = secure returns + photos + paper-form check fees + postage or travel + urgent extras

Budget total:

budget total = passport total + extras

Total with cushion:

cushion total = budget total x (1 + cushion percentage / 100)

The calculator treats the secure return fee as GBP 5 per selected document set because GOV.UK says supporting documents are returned free by normal second class post and usually cost an extra GBP 5 for secure delivery. If one application includes several supporting documents, still follow the application form wording rather than multiplying by document count. Check and Send, photo costs and urgent-service extras are editable because they are not the same for every family.

Worked Family Examples

Two Adults Renewing Online

Two adult 34-page online renewals cost GBP 204 before photos or optional extras. Add two photo costs at GBP 8 each and two secure document returns at GBP 5 each, and the planning total rises to GBP 230. That difference matters if the renewal is part of a bigger holiday booking.

Family Of Four

Two adult standard online renewals and two child standard online renewals cost GBP 337 in official passport fees. Add photos, secure returns and postage, and the household budget can move beyond GBP 380. The result card shows the average cost per application so the total is easier to split across savings.

Paper Form Household

Paper form applications cost more than online applications. If a family needs Post Office help, printed photos or extra branch visits, the extra lines should be entered before comparing the paper route with the online route. The calculator does not assume that paper help is wrong; it simply shows the price effect.

Family Renewal Checklist

Check each passport separately. A child passport, a first adult passport, a replacement for a lost passport, a name-change application and a straightforward adult renewal can need different evidence. A family may therefore have four applications but four different document lists. Keep birth certificates, old passports, countersignatory details, parental responsibility evidence and name-change documents in labelled folders before starting.

Plan around travel dates. Do not rely on an old passport being accepted close to expiry because destination entry rules can require extra validity beyond the return date. Some countries require blank pages as well as validity. A frequent traveller passport may be sensible for one adult but unnecessary for the whole family.

For photos, treat acceptance as part of the budget. Online photo checks can reject a file, and printed photo booths can still fail if the image does not match passport rules. If you are renewing several passports, one retake can disrupt the whole appointment plan. The budget cushion gives space for that kind of small but annoying cost.

FAQs

Are these the current UK passport fees?

The calculator uses GOV.UK passport fees shown for applications from 8 April 2026. Fees can change, so check GOV.UK before paying, especially if you are reading this near a fee update or applying from overseas.

Can I include both adults and children?

Yes. Enter adult standard, adult frequent traveller, child standard and child frequent traveller counts separately. The result itemises each group and then adds shared extras such as postage and urgent travel costs.

Does this cover overseas applications?

No. GOV.UK says applications from another country use different fees. Use this page for UK-based family budgeting only, or replace the fee values manually if you are making an overseas plan.

Should I choose secure return for every application?

That is a personal risk choice. GOV.UK says normal second class return is free for supporting documents, while secure delivery usually costs extra. Important certificates may justify the extra cost.

Is a 54-page passport worth it for children?

Usually only for children who travel often or need many visa pages. It costs more than a standard child passport, so compare the extra fee with likely use before selecting it.

Does this store family details?

No. The page works in the browser and does not ask for names, dates of birth, passport numbers or addresses. Use GOV.UK for the real application.
