What is Personal Independence Payment (PIP)?
Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit designed to help with the extra costs of living with a long-term health condition or disability. PIP is available to people aged 16 to State Pension age and is not means-tested, meaning your income and savings do not affect your eligibility.

How PIP Assessment Works
PIP assessment considers how your condition affects you, not your diagnosis. The assessment looks at two components:
Daily Living Activities
- Preparing or cooking food
- Taking nutrition (eating and drinking)
- Managing therapy or monitoring health conditions
- Washing and bathing
- Managing toilet needs or incontinence
- Dressing and undressing
- Communicating verbally
- Reading and comprehending signs, symbols and words
- Engaging with other people face to face
- Making budgeting decisions
Mobility Activities
- Planning and following journeys
- Moving around
Important Note
This calculator provides an estimate based on the components you might be awarded. The actual assessment process involves detailed evaluation of how your condition affects your daily life. Always consult with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or seek professional advice for accurate information about your specific situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is PIP paid?
PIP is usually paid every four weeks into your bank account, building society account, or Post Office card account. The payment covers the period you have just completed.
Do I need to have worked to get PIP?
No, PIP is not based on National Insurance contributions. You can claim PIP whether you are working, unemployed, retired, or in education.
Will PIP affect my other benefits?
PIP is not counted as income for means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, or Council Tax Reduction. However, it may affect some other benefits like Carer’s Allowance for your carer.
How long does PIP last?
PIP awards are usually made for a fixed period, typically between 1 and 10 years, depending on your condition. Some people with severe, lifelong conditions may receive an indefinite award.
Can I appeal a PIP decision?
Yes, if you disagree with a decision about your PIP claim, you can ask for a mandatory reconsideration first, and then appeal to an independent tribunal if you are still not satisfied.
