Print And Image Notes
PPI describes how many image pixels are placed into one inch of print. Pixels per centimetre is the same density expressed in metric units. If an image is 3600 by 2400 pixels, it can print at about 30.5 cm by 20.3 cm at 300 PPI. If the same file is printed at 150 PPI, it can be twice as wide and twice as tall, but fine detail may look softer up close.
Changing the PPI metadata in an image editor changes the intended physical size, not the captured detail. If resampling is turned off, pixel dimensions stay the same. If resampling is turned on, the software invents or removes pixels, which may or may not look acceptable. That is why the result card includes both converted density and print-size checks.
For professional print, ask the printer for their requested file size, bleed, colour space, file format and sharpening advice. A 300 PPI target is useful, but it is not a universal print rule.
File Checks Before Sending To Print
Before exporting the file, compare three figures: pixel dimensions, intended print size and required density. A file can carry 300 PPI metadata and still be too small if the pixel dimensions are low. The reverse can also happen: a file may say 72 PPI but contain enough pixels for a sharp print once placed at a smaller physical size. The converter is useful because it separates the density label from the actual pixel count.
Check cropping as well. A 3600 px wide photograph may be large enough for one print size, but a tight crop can reduce it to 1800 px. Bleed and trimming can also require extra pixels beyond the visible finished size. If text, line art or product images are involved, run a proof at the intended size rather than judging only on a screen. Screens hide some print softness and can make compressed edges look cleaner than they will on paper. Keep the printer’s specification beside the converted value so bleed, trim and colour notes are not lost.
