How to Use This Roof Tile Calculator
This calculator helps you estimate the number of roof tiles needed for your UK roofing project. Follow these steps for accurate results:
Step 1: Measure Your Roof
Measure the length and width of your roof area where tiles will be laid. For complex roofs, measure each section separately and add the totals together.
Step 2: Determine Roof Pitch
The roof pitch affects how tiles overlap and therefore impacts the total quantity needed. If unsure, most UK homes have pitches between 35° and 45°.
Step 3: Select Tile Type
Different tiles have varying coverage rates per square metre. Our calculator includes coverage data for all major tile types used in the UK.
Step 4: Choose Waste Factor
Always add extra tiles to account for cutting, breakage, and future repairs. We recommend 15% for most projects.
UK Roof Tile Types and Coverage
Clay Plain Tiles
Coverage: 60 tiles per m²
Size: 265mm x 165mm
Traditional choice offering excellent durability and weather resistance. Popular for period properties and conservation areas.
Concrete Interlocking
Coverage: 10.5 tiles per m²
Size: 420mm x 330mm
Modern, cost-effective option with excellent weather performance. Quick to install due to larger size and interlocking design.
Natural Slate
Coverage: 21 tiles per m²
Size: 500mm x 250mm
Premium roofing material offering exceptional longevity and aesthetic appeal. Common in Wales and traditional British architecture.
Pantiles
Coverage: 16 tiles per m²
Size: 387mm x 230mm
S-shaped tiles popular in eastern England. Provide excellent water runoff and distinctive Mediterranean appearance.
Factors Affecting Tile Quantity
Roof Pitch Impact
Steeper roofs require more tiles due to increased surface area and different overlap requirements. Our calculator automatically adjusts for pitch angles from 15° to 50°.
Tile Overlap and Headlap
Tiles must overlap to prevent water penetration. The amount of overlap (headlap) varies by tile type and roof pitch, affecting the total quantity needed.
Roof Complexity
Complex roofs with dormers, valleys, hips, and chimneys require additional tiles for cutting and fitting. Increase your waste factor for complex geometries.
Additional Materials Required
Beyond tiles, your roofing project will require additional materials:
Ridge Tiles
Measure the total length of ridge lines (where two roof slopes meet) and divide by the length of individual ridge tiles, typically 300-450mm.
Batten Requirements
Roof battens support the tiles. Calculate linear metres needed based on batten spacing (gauge) for your chosen tile type.
Underlay and Breathable Membrane
Measure total roof area and add 10% for overlaps. Underlays typically come in 50m² rolls.
Nails and Fixings
Allow approximately 2-3 nails per tile, depending on tile type and exposure conditions.
Common Roof Tile Installation Mistakes
Incorrect Batten Spacing
Each tile type requires specific batten gauge. Incorrect spacing leads to poor weather performance and premature failure.
Insufficient Headlap
Minimum headlap varies by tile type and roof pitch. Insufficient overlap causes water penetration and structural damage.
Poor Valley and Hip Details
Complex roof junctions require careful planning and specialist tiles. Improper installation at these points causes the majority of roof leaks.
Inadequate Ventilation
Modern building regulations require adequate roof ventilation to prevent condensation and structural damage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this calculator?
This calculator provides estimates accurate to within 5-10% for standard roof configurations. Always add appropriate waste factors and consult professionals for complex roofs.
What if my roof pitch isn’t listed?
Select the closest available option. For pitches outside our range (below 15° or above 50°), consult a roofing professional as special installation methods may be required.
Should I order extra tiles?
Yes, always order 10-20% extra tiles. This accounts for breakage during installation, future repairs, and ensures colour matching from the same batch.
Can I mix different tile types?
Generally no. Different tile types require different batten spacing, installation methods, and have varying weather performance characteristics.
How long do roof tiles last in the UK climate?
Clay tiles typically last 50-100+ years, concrete tiles 30-50 years, and natural slate can exceed 100 years with proper maintenance.
Do I need planning permission to replace roof tiles?
Usually not for like-for-like replacements, but check with local planning authorities, especially in conservation areas or for listed buildings.
