How School Ages Work in the UK
The UK education system determines which school year your child enters based on their date of birth and the country they live in. Each region has slightly different cut-off dates.
Cut-off Dates by Region
- England & Wales: 31st August – Children born between 1st September and 31st August will be in the same school year
- Scotland: 28th/29th February – Children born between 1st March and the last day of February will be in the same school year
Important Note
In England and Wales, if your child’s 5th birthday falls between 1st April and 31st August, you can choose to defer their school entry until the following September, though this is uncommon.

- 1st January – 31st March: They start school in September (or can defer to January)
- 1st April – 31st August: They start school in September (or can defer to April or September of the following year)
Scotland
Children in Scotland typically start Primary 1 in August. The school year runs from August to June. Children born between 1st March and the last day of February the following year are in the same school year.
