How Student Loan Repayments Work

Student loan repayments are automatically deducted from your salary through PAYE (Pay As You Earn) if you’re employed. You only repay when your income exceeds the threshold for your loan plan.

The repayment is calculated as a percentage of your income above the threshold, not your total income. For example, if you earn £30,000 and you’re on Plan 2 (threshold £28,470), you’d repay 9% of £1,530 (the amount above the threshold), which equals £137.70 per year or £11.48 per month.

Interest Rates for 2025-26

  • Plan 1: 3.2% (RPI rate)
  • Plan 2: Variable rate based on income (RPI + up to 3%)
  • Plan 4: Variable rate based on income
  • Plan 5: 3.2% (RPI rate)
  • Postgraduate: Up to 6.2% (RPI + 3%)

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I start repaying my student loan?
You start repaying your student loan when your income exceeds the repayment threshold for your loan plan. This typically happens automatically through PAYE if you’re employed, or through self-assessment if you’re self-employed.
What happens if my income drops below the threshold?
If your income falls below the repayment threshold, your repayments will automatically stop. They will resume once your income rises above the threshold again.
Can I make voluntary repayments?
Yes, you can make voluntary repayments directly to the Student Loans Company. However, consider whether this is financially beneficial, as many loans are written off after 25-30 years.
When is my loan written off?
Plan 1 loans are written off 25 years after you become liable to repay. Plan 2 loans are written off 30 years after you become liable to repay. Plan 4 loans are written off 30 years after you become liable to repay. Plan 5 loans are written off 40 years after you become liable to repay.
What if I move abroad?
You’re still liable to repay your student loan if you move abroad. The Student Loans Company will contact you to arrange repayments based on the cost of living in your new country.
How do I check my loan balance?
You can check your loan balance by logging into your Student Loans Company online account or by calling them directly. Your balance includes the original amount borrowed plus any interest that has accrued.

Important Considerations

Please note: This calculator provides estimates based on current rates and thresholds. Actual repayments may vary due to changes in government policy, interest rates, or individual circumstances.

Tax Implications

Student loan repayments are deducted from your gross income before income tax is calculated. This means your student loan repayments reduce your taxable income, potentially lowering your income tax liability.

Multiple Jobs

If you have multiple jobs, student loan deductions are calculated based on your total annual income. However, deductions through PAYE are calculated per job, which may result in over or underpayments that are reconciled at the end of the tax year.

Self-Employment

If you’re self-employed, you’ll need to calculate and pay your student loan repayments through your self-assessment tax return. The same thresholds and rates apply, but payments are made annually rather than monthly.
