How To Estimate Fridge Electricity Use
1Use Label kWh
The energy label or manual annual kWh is the easiest starting point. It already accounts for cycling under test conditions.
2Check Temperature
A fridge set too cold can use more electricity. The Food Standards Agency advises keeping chilled food at 5 C or below.
3Leave Air Space
Blocked rear or side ventilation makes the appliance reject heat less efficiently, especially in fitted kitchens.
4Watch Door Habits
Frequent opening, warm leftovers and damaged seals all make the compressor work longer.
What The Result Means
The yearly cost line multiplies adjusted annual kWh by the unit rate you enter. The daily and monthly lines make the result easier to compare with cooking, laundry and heating appliances. Fridges often use less power than people expect, but they run continuously, so age and condition still matter.
The estimate is not a food-safety check. If the fridge cannot hold a safe temperature, smells unusual, leaks, freezes salad or has a failing seal, the issue may need maintenance or replacement. A cheap running cost is not useful if food is not kept cold enough.
Formula And Method
Label mode annual kWh = entered label kWh.
Watts mode annual kWh = watts x duty cycle percentage x 24 x 365 / 1000.
Adjusted annual kWh = base annual kWh x (1 + condition adjustment percentage).
Annual cost = adjusted annual kWh x electricity unit rate.
Monthly cost = annual cost / 12.
Period cost = monthly cost x comparison months.
Worked Fridge Examples
Small Larder Fridge
A 115 kWh label fridge at 24.67p per kWh costs about GBP 28 a year before adjustment. Good airflow and seals keep it near the label figure.
Older Kitchen Fridge
If an older fridge effectively uses 30% more energy, the annual cost rises. That does not automatically justify replacement, but it gives a number for comparison.
Shared House
Frequent door opening and overloaded shelves can raise use and reduce cooling quality. The adjustment field can model that behaviour.

When To Measure With A Plug-In Monitor
If you suspect a fridge is expensive, measure it for at least a week. One day can be misleading because shopping day, room temperature and cooking habits affect door opening. Compare the measured kWh with the label, then rerun the calculator with measured annualised use.
If a fridge is used for medicines, infant feeding, commercial food, shared accommodation or vulnerable household members, temperature reliability may matter more than energy cost. Keep the cost result alongside safety checks rather than treating it as the only decision point.
Reading A Fridge Energy Label And Tariff
The energy label annual kWh figure is normally the cleanest input because the bill is also charged by kWh. A fridge with a low wattage rating can still cost more than expected if it runs for a large share of the day. Conversely, a compressor may have a high momentary draw but a modest yearly kWh figure because it cycles off once the cabinet is cold. That is why the watts mode asks for duty cycle rather than assuming the rated watts run continuously.
Use the electricity unit rate from your tariff, not the full monthly direct debit. The direct debit may include standing charge, previous debt, credit balance and other fuel use. The result is unique to this fridge check because it separates energy label, tariff, condition adjustment and comparison period. It helps decide whether to clean seals, move the appliance, measure it, repair it or price a replacement without pretending that running cost is the only factor.
For a shared house or rental, record the settings before making changes. A fridge turned colder to mask poor cooling may use more energy while still failing to hold food at a safe temperature. A thermometer reading, an energy monitor result and a photo of the label together give a landlord, housemate or repairer a clearer starting point. If the fridge is integrated behind a cabinet door, check that the ventilation slots are not covered by stored items or dust.
