What This Calculator Compares
This page compares electricity cost for cooking the same food in an air fryer and an electric oven. It works best for meals where both appliances are realistic options: chips, chicken pieces, fish fingers, roast vegetables, frozen snacks, baked potatoes, small pies or reheated leftovers. It does not include the cost of ingredients, washing up, replacement parts or the value of time saved.
The result uses power, minutes and a duty factor. A heating appliance usually cycles on and off once hot, so it may not draw full rated power for the whole cook. If you want a simple upper estimate, set duty factor to 100%. If you have measured the appliance with an energy monitor, adjust the duty factor until the calculated kWh matches the meter reading.
Why The Cheapest Appliance Can Change
An air fryer is often cheaper for small portions because it heats a smaller chamber and usually needs less preheat time. An oven can be better when it cooks several trays at once, handles a large dish, or replaces several air fryer batches. The calculator does not assume the air fryer always wins. It simply compares the energy used for the actual minutes and power values you enter.
Capacity is the hidden issue. If four portions fit in the air fryer basket and twelve fit on oven trays, the fair comparison may be one oven cook against three air fryer cooks. Formula Used
kWh = appliance kW x cooking minutes / 60 x duty factor
cost = kWh x electricity price per kWh
annual saving = saving per cook x cooks per week x weeks per year
payback weeks = purchase price / weekly saving
The carbon comparison multiplies the kWh difference by the editable carbon factor. For formal carbon reporting, use the latest UK Government conversion factors rather than the example value in the tool.
Worked Example: Chips For Four
An air fryer rated at 1.5 kW cooks chips for four servings in 22 minutes. With an 85% duty factor, the cook uses about 0.47 kWh. At 28p per kWh, that is about 13p. An oven rated at 2.4 kW takes 45 minutes including preheat. With a 75% duty factor, it uses about 1.35 kWh, or 38p. The air fryer saves about 25p for that cook.
If the household makes that swap four times a week for 52 weeks, the annual saving is about GBP 52. If a new air fryer costs GBP 90, the simple payback is around 90 / 1.00 per week, or about 90 weeks. Food needs space for hot air to move. If the basket is overcrowded, the cheapest-looking cook can become pale, uneven or unsafe. Shake or turn food where the recipe asks, and follow pack instructions for frozen items.
Oven Checks
An oven can cook several trays together, but opening the door, poor shelf spacing and long preheat times can add energy. If the oven is already hot for another dish, its extra cost for a second tray may be much lower.
