Care time
Food, bedding checks, cleaning, toileting, supervision, feeding notes, medication handling and communication all sit behind the nightly price.
Facility or home setting
Kennels, home boarding and sitter stays have different staffing, space and licence conditions. The cheapest quote may not fit an anxious, reactive or elderly dog.
Calendar pressure
Bank holidays, Christmas, school holidays and last-minute stays often cost more. Trial nights can be good value if they prevent a poor longer stay.
How to Use the Calculator
Choose the boarding type, then enter the quoted nightly price. Do not rely on a town average if you already have a provider quote, because boarding prices are shaped by staff ratios, licence conditions, insurance, heating, outdoor space, security, cleaning standards and the level of update you receive. Use the dog size or care level field for large dogs, puppies, senior dogs, anxious dogs or dogs that need more staff time.
Add peak uplift only when the provider applies it. Some providers raise the nightly rate for Christmas, Easter, bank holidays and school holidays; others use a flat rate but ask for a larger deposit. Extra walks, enrichment and medication handling should be entered separately so you can see whether the base stay is cheap but the final care plan is not. If the dog needs insulin, seizure monitoring, wound checks or post-operative care, ask your vet and the provider whether boarding is suitable before booking.
Subtract the deposit only after you have paid it. Keep cancellation terms beside the estimate. A non-refundable deposit, late collection fee or early return rule can change the amount still due.

Care Checklist Before Booking
- Licence: In England, many boarding activities need an animal activity licence from the local authority. Ask for the licence number and rating.
- Vaccinations and parasite control: Check the provider’s rules early. Some vaccinations need time before the stay.
- Behaviour: Share separation anxiety, guarding, reactivity, escape history and bite history honestly. It protects your dog and staff.
- Food: Provide feeding amounts, allergies, treats allowed and what to do if the dog refuses food.
- Emergency plan: Give vet details, insurance details, consent limits and contact people who can answer quickly.
Worked Example
A seven-night kennel stay is quoted at £32 per night. The provider adds a 15% school holiday uplift, £6 per day for an extra one-to-one walk and £3 per day for medication handling. A trial visit and transport cost £25, and the owner has already paid a £50 deposit. The calculator totals the base stay, uplift and daily care items, then subtracts the deposit to show the balance still due.
If the same dog is anxious and needs sole-dog home boarding, the base rate may rise but daily extras may fall because more care is included. The best comparison is not the nightly price alone. Compare the written care plan, licence, staff experience, emergency plan and final bill together.
FAQ
Should I enter food cost?
Add food only if the provider supplies it or charges extra. Many owners send the dog’s normal food to reduce stomach upsets.
Is home boarding always better than kennels?
No. Some dogs prefer kennel routine, while others do better in a home. Suitability depends on temperament, health, training, separation tolerance and the provider’s setup.
Can a provider give medication?
Some can, but they may need written instructions and may decline certain medical needs. Ask your vet where health risk is present.
Should I pay for a trial visit?
A trial can be worth budgeting for before a long stay, especially for anxious dogs, puppies, seniors or dogs new to boarding.
What if collection is late?
Add a late collection or extra-night charge if the provider has one. Flight delays and traffic can turn a final day into another billable period.
