What This Asphalt Converter Does

This page converts asphalt volume into tonnes for paving estimates. It is useful when a drawing gives cubic metres, or when you know the area and compacted thickness of a drive, path, repair patch, car park bay or service trench reinstatement. The calculator applies a mix density, adds a waste allowance, then shows estimated tonnes, rounded lorry loads and material cost.

Asphalt is normally ordered by weight, but site quantities are often measured by volume or area. A thin 30 mm surface course and a thicker base course may use different mixes and densities. The same square metre area can therefore need very different tonnage if the thickness or mix changes.

The formula is simple, but the density and thickness must match the actual asphalt layer. If the drawing gives compacted thickness, use compacted thickness. If a supplier gives a density for a specific mix, use that value instead of a broad planning figure.

Worked Examples

Driveway Surface

A 60 m2 surface course at 50 mm is 3.0 m3. At 2.40 t/m3, the base weight is 7.2 tonnes. With 5% allowance, order about 7.56 tonnes.

Small Patch

A 12 m2 patch at 40 mm is only 0.48 m3. At small scale, minimum plant orders, collection rules and hand placement losses may matter more than the exact formula.

Base Course

A 100 m2 base layer at 70 mm is 7 m3. At 2.40 t/m3, that is 16.8 tonnes before allowance, close to a single 20 tonne lorry load.

How To Measure Before Ordering

Measure the finished paved area, then separate layers by thickness. Do not combine a 60 mm base and 30 mm surface layer unless both use the same density and price. If the edge shape is irregular, split it into rectangles and triangles, then add the areas. For repairs, measure the saw-cut area rather than the damaged area only, because the final reinstatement may be larger.

Check levels and falls before using the result. Extra asphalt may be needed to correct low spots, tie into existing surfaces or build falls to drainage. On the other hand, over-ordering hot asphalt can be costly because the material has a limited working time and surplus disposal may have a charge.

When The Estimate Needs Review

  • Highway work, adopted roads or work controlled by a specification.
  • Very small patching jobs where plant minimums apply.
  • Layer thickness changes across the area.
  • Recycled asphalt, planings or cold-lay products.
  • Work where compaction testing, core checks or material tickets are required.

Delivery Ticket Checks

For paid works, compare the calculated tonnage with the delivery ticket. Tickets normally show actual weight loaded, not only the estimate. Keep the mix name, time of loading, vehicle registration and temperature notes with the job file where applicable. If a delivery is split across several small drops, add the ticket weights before comparing them with the calculator result.

Shortfall and surplus should be reviewed differently. A shortfall can point to thicker laying, uneven base levels or measurement error. A surplus can point to over-ordering, a changed area or a density assumption that was too high.
