What To Check Before Requesting Quotes

1Parking Position

Measure where the vehicle usually parks and where the charger could be mounted. The cable route, drilling, trunking and whether the lead crosses a walkway can all affect the quote.

2Electrical Supply

Tell the installer about your consumer unit, main fuse, existing high-load appliances, solar, battery storage and whether you already have an isolator. Load management may be needed.

3Grant Eligibility

OZEV grant rules have changed over time and depend on property type and applicant status. Check the current GOV.UK grant page before entering any support in the calculator.

How To Read The Cost Result

The main result is the estimated amount you pay after the selected VAT treatment and grant deduction. The bar split shows whether the cost is being driven mainly by the charger unit, standard labour or site-specific extras. That split matters because a cheaper wallbox may not reduce the total much if the hard part is a long cable route, consumer unit work or making good surfaces after installation.

The result is specific to your entered quote assumptions. A driveway with the meter cupboard near the parking space can be very different from a flat, rented home, listed building, shared car park or detached garage. Use the estimate to compare quotes line by line, not to decide whether an installer has priced fairly without seeing the property.

Formula And Method

Extra cable cost = extra cable metres x cost per metre.

Extras = extra cable cost + electrical upgrade allowance + groundwork or making good.

Subtotal = charger unit price + base installation labour + extras.

VAT amount = subtotal x selected VAT rate.

Total payable = subtotal + VAT amount – grant or contribution.

The calculator keeps grant and VAT separate so that you can compare quotes on the same basis. Some installers quote a package price, some itemise labour and parts, and some show VAT treatment differently. If a quote states VAT included, leave the VAT selector at zero rather than adding 20% again.

Worked Installation Examples

Simple Driveway

A charger at GBP 520, labour at GBP 360 and 5 metres of extra cable at GBP 18 comes to a modest installation before any electrical upgrade. The estimate is mainly charger and labour, so comparing wallbox features can change the total.

Detached Garage

A detached garage may need a longer route, weatherproofing and more labour. Add extra cable and a site allowance rather than hiding those items in the charger price.

Flat Or Rented Home

Eligibility for grants and permissions can matter as much as the equipment cost. Ask about freeholder, landlord, parking-bay and management-company requirements before paying a deposit.

Cost Items To Ask About In A Quote

Ask whether the installer has included notification, certification and any required network-operator steps. Some homes need a supply check before a high-load charger is fitted, especially where the main fuse rating, looped supply, solar equipment or battery storage creates extra questions. A good quote should say what is included, what is provisional and what would trigger a revised price.

Is a home EV charger grant still available?

Some grants remain for eligible property and applicant types, but rules change. Check the current GOV.UK pages before relying on a grant amount.

Can I install a charger myself?

EV chargepoint installation involves high electrical loads and safety rules. Use a competent installer and keep the certification documents.

Why is my quote higher than the calculator?

Your home may need a longer cable run, load management, earthing work, consumer unit changes, trenching or permissions that the default inputs did not include.

Does the calculator include running costs?

No. It estimates installation cost only. Use an EV tariff or charging-cost calculator for kWh running costs.

Should I choose tethered or untethered?

Tethered chargers are convenient if the cable suits your car. Untethered chargers can look tidier and suit mixed connector needs. The cost difference depends on model.

Does VAT always apply?

VAT treatment can depend on the job and quote. If your installer has quoted a VAT-inclusive price, do not add VAT again in the calculator.
