What This Converter Does
This converter estimates tonnes of limestone chippings from cubic metres. It also calculates cubic metres from area and depth, which is useful for paths, drive surfaces, border dressing, drainage strips and decorative stone areas. The result includes tonnes, kilograms, rounded bulk bags and an optional cost estimate.
Limestone chippings are heavier than bark and many organic materials, but density still varies. Smaller chippings can pack differently from 20 mm stone. Fines, dust, moisture and angular shape can all alter bulk weight. The calculator gives a practical planning result while keeping the density assumption visible.
Formula Used
Volume from area = area x depth in metres. Base tonnes = volume x limestone bulk density. Order tonnes = base tonnes x allowance. Bulk bags = order tonnes divided by bag weight, rounded up. Cost = order tonnes x price per tonne.
If the layer will be compacted, use a density and depth that match the finished layer. If the stone is only being spread loose as a decorative surface, use the loose finished depth.

Worked Examples
One Cubic Metre
1 m3 of 20 mm limestone chippings at 1.58 t/m3 weighs about 1.58 tonnes before allowance.
Path Layer
18 m2 at 50 mm is 0.90 m3. At 1.58 t/m3, the base weight is 1.42 tonnes before allowance.
Bulk Bags
With 10% allowance, 1.42 tonnes becomes 1.56 tonnes. At 0.85 tonnes per bag, that rounds to two bulk bags.
Measuring And Laying Notes
Measure inside the edging, not outside it. Convert millimetres of depth into metres before multiplying. A 50 mm layer is 0.05 m. If the area has curves, divide it into simpler shapes and add the areas. Use a larger allowance where the ground is uneven or where the chippings will be spread around obstacles.
Limestone can create dust and may mark surfaces during delivery and spreading. Protect drains, light-coloured paving and finished thresholds while moving the material. If the surface will take vehicles, the visible chippings should sit over a properly prepared base.
Stone Size, Fines And Finished Depth
Limestone chippings are commonly sold by nominal size, such as 6 mm, 10 mm or 20 mm. The size affects how the layer looks, how it locks together and how easily it moves under foot or tyres. Smaller chippings can create a tighter surface but may include more fines. Larger chippings can show gaps if the layer is too shallow. The depth in the calculator should match the visible finished layer, not the height of the pile before raking.
Fines and dust can increase bulk density and help a surface bind, but too many fines may reduce drainage. For a decorative border, this may not matter much. For a drainage strip or permeable edge detail, it can matter a lot. Ask for grading information if the stone has a technical purpose beyond appearance. If the supplier gives a density for the exact product, use that value rather than the default.
Vehicle Areas And Drainage Limits
For driveways and parking areas, limestone chippings are usually only the upper wearing layer. The strength comes from the prepared formation and sub-base below. A thicker loose top layer is not a substitute for a suitable base and can make wheel tracks worse. Use the converter for the chippings quantity, then check the base design separately.
For drainage strips, the converter can estimate stone weight, but it cannot decide pipe size, fall, membrane choice or soakaway capacity. Keep soil out of the stone where drainage performance matters. On sloping ground, edging and restraints may be needed to stop chippings moving during heavy rain. For visible borders beside paving, order a small spare quantity from the same batch for later touch-ups.
