What Daily GB Means
Mbps describes the rate at which bits can move each second. GB per day describes the amount of data moved over a day. The shortcut is handy for quick checks: 1 Mbps running all day is about 10.8 GB per day. If the connection is active for only 12 hours, halve the value. If it averages 50% utilisation while active, halve it again. The binary GiB result is smaller because a GiB is larger than a decimal GB.

Daily Data Cap And Retention Notes
A daily amount can look small as a speed but large as storage. Ten megabits per second may sound modest, yet it can exceed 3 TB in a 30-day month if it runs continuously. That is why data caps, surveillance retention, off-site backups and server replication need amount-based planning as well as speed-based planning.
For storage retention, multiply the daily amount by the number of days kept. Then add any overhead for file containers, indexes, thumbnails, snapshots, parity, compression limits or duplicate copies. For capped connections, compare the daily estimate with the allowance after normal household or business traffic. A process that is harmless on an unlimited fixed line may be expensive on a capped SIM or roaming plan.
Reading The Daily Result Alongside Logs
Device logs may report traffic per calendar day, per rolling 24 hours, or since the last restart. Match that reporting period before comparing with the converter. A camera restarted at midday may show half a day of traffic, while a provider portal may show a billing-day total. If the two figures differ, first check the time period, then check whether uploads, downloads, thumbnails, alerts and remote viewing are all counted in the same way.

Why does the calculator have active hours?
Many tasks do not run all day. A scheduled backup, work-hours camera feed or overnight sync should be calculated for the hours it is active. Active hours prevent a short task from being overstated as a 24-hour load.
What does utilisation mean?
Utilisation is the share of the active period where the connection is actually moving data at the entered rate. A 50 Mbps link at 50% average utilisation moves the same daily amount as 25 Mbps at 100% utilisation for the same hours.
Should I choose GB or GiB?
Choose decimal GB for provider data plans, storage labels and most public-facing usage estimates. Choose GiB when matching software that clearly reports binary units. Keep the choice with the result when sharing it.
Can this estimate camera storage?
Yes, if you know the sustained bitrate and recording hours. For a full retention plan, also add audio, metadata, motion-only recording rules, compression changes, exported clips and any duplicate backup copy.
Does the result include network overhead?
No. It is a unit conversion from the rate entered, adjusted only by your active hours and utilisation fields. Protocol overhead, retries and storage containers may change the real amount recorded by a device or provider.
